I am trying to find the connection between Charles HICKS, originally of Milford and arrived in Rye by about 1815, and Jeremiah SMITH of Rye. Books and articles call Hicks a business partner and brother-in-law to Smith. Further, James Smith, Jeremiah Smith's father, names Charles Hicks in the first paragraph of his will, leaving Hicks the same amount of cash as he leaves his wife (Mary CHATTERTON) and his wife's sister who has been living with them. However, Charles Hicks married Elizabeth EDMONDS, and Jeremiah Smith married his first cousin Charlotte Smith. I can't find a first marriage for Charles Hicks or a missing Smith daughter. Could there be another meaning for brother-in-law that I'm missing? I'm running out of ideas for even searching for their connection. Thanks for thinking on this with me. Amanda
