That would answer a lot, but Charles Hicks's mother was Susannah Elgar, also of Milford/Lymington, who appears to have died as the widow Susannah Hicks in Milford. Charles's brother Edward did briefly move to Rye, where his oldest son was born, and their sister married Charles's wife Elizabeth Edmonds's brother at Peasmarsh. They were quite invested. For what it's worth, Edward Hicks was not mentioned in the will, and James Smith's step-son Jesse Piper is named in the will with the other children as "son of my said wife." I really am stumped!
