Christine: As I understand it, the original registers (for register office events) should still be with the register office concerned though some register offices have closed or merged which means they should be with the current register office covering the area. Any register office should be able to advise you. For parish registers, most are now in county record offices. If your local library has a copy of Phillimores Atlas and Guide to Parish Registers that will give you a list, county by county, of which parish registers exist and where they are archived.
