Les Davey, in his little book entitled The inns of Lewes past and present, writes that his grandfather told him that it used to be said that Lewes could once boast 7 churches, 7 breweries and 70 inns. Yes, the breweries would have supplied the inns and beer-houses in and around Lewes, as well as employing many of the inhabitants. Nowadays only one brewery, Harveys, remains and there are far fewer pubs. There are still 7 churches.
