The Bubonic Plague was caused by a bacterium. There is a very interesting article on the Plague and it's relationship to susceptibility to the HIV virus on the PBS website ( http://www.pbs.org/wnet/secrets/case_plague/clues.html). PBS is the equivalent to the BBC (of old) in the US.
