Was it the done thing to take ome's housemaid to India when one's family was soldiering in the Punjab in the 1850s? I am trying to find out whether the Herbert family- Lt Col Charles Herbert and his new wife Sophia-took a relative of mine Sarah Ann Noakes out to India with them about 1854 after they married in England. Sarah Ann had worked for Sophia's parents in Ramsgate in 1851. However she features in no more censuses after 1851 nor is her death recorded on freebmd nor did she marry between 1851 and the next census. I can only think she went abroad. Does anyone have any evidence of English servants going to India with their families? Julian Noakes 11756
Hi Julian, I can't answer your question, but you could ask FIBIS (Families in British India Society). They are very helpful and I have found them pretty knowledgeable about life in India and who did what. Their website is www.fibis.org.
