Some of my ancestors from the STOPHAM and FITTLEWORTH area are listed as living at 'BROWNSHALL FARM' - CHURCHWOOD- and NORTHCHAPEL. Can anyone tell me if these places still exist and if so, roughly where they are? Tess Spencer 11414
I might be able to help re NorthChapel. I have a gt gt grandmother Charlotte Puduck. In the 1851 census her birthplace is given as Luper, Petworth but in the 1881 census her birthplace is given as North Chapple Sussex. Today the spelling has changed to Northchapel. It is a village about 5 miles north of Petworth. See the wikepedia entry - the population was given as 785 in 1861, it's a civil parish within Chichester. Stopham is a small village about 2-3 miles west of Pulborough miles. And Fittleworth is a slightly larger one a further mile or so west. Churchwood is marked as an area about 1/4 mile north of Fittleoworth - but it doesn't seem to have a village as such there, no church or pub marked. Northchapel lies about 18 miles northwest of Stopham, Fittleworth and Churchwood. Many thanks for the information Richard, I knew that Stopham and Fittleworth were villages but wasn't sure about Northchapel, Churchwood and Brownshall. Some of my ancestors from the STOPHAM and FITTLEWORTH area are listed as living at 'BROWNSHALL FARM' - CHURCHWOOD- and NORTHCHAPEL. Can anyone tell me if these places still exist and if so, roughly where they are? Tess Spencer 11414 Dear Tess I have a few pages from Fittleworth parish magazines in late 1890s. If you family members were in the area then, their names may be mentioned. What was the surname? Margaret Major 5836
Hello Tess, My great grandfather lived in Churchwood. Yes it's still there - a collection of houses about a half mile to the north of the main road (A283) between Stopham and Fittleworth. Northchapel is not far away - a village about 5 miles north of Petworth (itself 3 miles west of Fittleworth) on the A283. If you would like it, I could scan a section of the Ordnance Survey map for that part of Sussex. Let me know, Regards Christine Jackson SFHG 397 "M. Dear Margaret - The family name is HAWKINS , There were several who moved within the Stopham / Fittleworth area. I would be very interested to know if you come up with anything.
