    3. Hello Margaret It looks as if the TREVETTs didn't register the births of their earlier children. I couldn't find one for the birth of their son Francis H who appears in the 1851 census aged 1 or the older two. No sign of Fanny (or Frances) between 1851-55. Nor anything that looks like a corrupted surname possibility. There was a Fanny Elizabeth Levett registered in the last quarter of 1851 but she looks to have died the next year. However, there does seem to be a marriage for a Frances Trevett on FreeBMD. In the third quarter of 1877, two possibilities for her husband but the 1881 census reveals which one as she's then married to Charles S Butler and still living at Lancing. FreeBMD has the groom as Charles Fairs Butler. They had young twin sons with them. Looking for baptisms on the IGI I couldn't see any TREVETT or TREVITT at Lancing but there are six as TRIVETT, all given as children of Francis Trivett and Sarah Jeffree. These include one for Fanny on 25 Apr 1852. Odd that Sarah's maiden name is given in distorted form as well, I see that their marriage entry has them as TREVETT and JEFFRY. The baptisms are all for different years so the consistent different spellings are rather strange. If you look at the parish register for Lancing there's a chance that Fanny's birth date might have been included - but it's not guaranteed. Note, this was originally sent to your own address but it bounced because your ISP is blocking emails from my ISP. Now sent to the list even though I know it duplicates some of the information supplied by other listers. 3. Hello Julie, There are some strange and inconsistent spellings in the Lancing registers. However, there are also some very useful additions. During the period of around 1844 to 1863, in addition to showing the date of birth as well as the date of baptism for each child, the vicar or clerk also made a note in the register of the mother's Maiden name. Now that can be a very useful thing and it is the only West Sussex parish where I have known that to happen, except where the child is illegitimate. The habit of recording dates of birth continued beyond 1863 and until about 1885, but recording the mother's Maiden name was discontinued around 1863.. When I examined the Lancing Burial Register, I noted that there was a very high level of infant deaths in Lancing between 1891 and 1894 and I have often wondered whether there was a particular problem in the parish e.g. bad water, poor sewerage arrangements etc to account for them all.
