I have become totally beazled trying to establish my great grandmother's background & wonder if anyone has any information that could help. Her maiden name was Sophia Santer & she was born in or about 1831, possibly in Cranbrook, Kent, possibly to a Stephen Santer. According to the Kent Record Office there is no trace of her in the Cranbrook parish registers, & in the 1841 census she appears as an inmate of the Uckfield Union Workhouse, birthplace local, presumably meaning not Cranbrook. By 1851 she was working as a servant in Uckfield & in 1856 she married Henry Daws there. The marriage certificate gives her father as Stephen Santer of Cranbrook, but none of the witnesses is her relative, apparently. Henry died in 1864 & Sophia married his uncle, my great grandfather, George Dawes , the same year in Brighton. Again on the marriage certificate, bride's father is named Stephen Santer, & again none of the witnesses is her relative. George died in 1869, leaving her with three children to bring up. About 1900 Sophia moved in with her son, Charles Dawes, my grandfather, & his wife Janet (k.a. Jeanette; nee Streeter), & lived out her days with them in Church Street, Uckfield. So, back to the request, please does anyone know for certain who Sophia's parents were & where she was born. Hopefully, Adrian.
