Dear Corinne, My husband's advice is to try the NSW State Archives. We have had a quick look but couldn't find any reference to people called Eldridge arriving in 1838 (though there were some on other dates), nor any reference to the "Amelia Thompson". He was surprised not to find the ship. Is it worth going back to your source for this information to check again? (I dragged him into it because he's the one with Australian ancestors so knows his way round these records. I'm only a first generation Aussie.) Hello Eleanor, Thank you for helping me with this and please thank your husband, it is very kind of you both. I already have all the info from Australia, including the Passenger List, Bounty Agents dockets. etc. etc. According to the records, the barque, "Amelia Thompson", did arrive in Botony Bay on 1st. July 1838 ...... having sailed from Plymouth on 28th. March. Those on board were mostly "Bounty Migrants" brought out by Marshall. It was a "Typhus Ship" and was quarantined on arrival. it's Master, Captain Dawson, attributed at least 30 of the 40+ deaths during the voyage to Typhus ...... two of whom were from my family. The voyage has been well documented, including in the newspapers of the day. Even "The Times" gave it a mention. But before I had to put my research on hold, I found a reference in UK records of the Parish paying or contributing to the passage monies for my ELDRIDGEs and then my husband became ill before I could order it. It would have had to been a "reliable source" and I can remember that I was going to get UK type money to order it. Feel sure that the record was in Sussex. My mind keeps going back to "Poor Law" records, but that could be because I know that in some Parishes, the "Overseers of the Poor" did pay, or contribute to, the fares of Parishioners to emigrate. Can't find anything on The National Archives site. Would love to be able to get the information. Kindest Regards ......
