    3. Hello Judith   A quick glance at the IGI shows a number of Thunders in various places in Sussex including Lewes, where you already have a connection, and several other towns. There also seem to be quite a lot in Kent, which offers the hope that it is a localised surname. As Carter Thunder died before civil registration ther will be no death certifiacte for him so you will be very largely dependent on parish records. As you have dates for his marriage and death you are clearly familiar with seareching parish records, so I would suggest you take a closer look at the records for both Brighton and Lewes - were there any other Thunders in either parish? Or in adjoining parishes? The filmed registers are easily available via your nearest Mormon church family history centre - see a list on their website, www.familysearch.org - at a nominal fee.   Also as Thunder is a rare surname, look for MIs, which may take you to earlier members of the family.   Is there any particular reason you think Chiddingly may be significant, other than finding some entries on the IGI? The place name looks at first sight as though it is called after ownership or occupation by someone called Thunder, but this does not necesarily mean a direct ancestor.   Kathleen --- On Sat, 7/26/08, Jude Charlton <jude.charlton@googlemail.com> wrote: From: Jude Charlton <jude.charlton@googlemail.com> Subject: [SFHG] Thunder Family To: SFHG@rootsweb.com Date: Saturday, July 26, 2008, 9:21 AM I'm new to this group and have started to research my paternal grandmother's family. Their surname is Thunder and the earliest person I can find is Carter Thunder, born 1775 (don't know where), died 1839 in Brighton. He was married in 1800 at St Michael, Lewes. I've found a large number of much earlier Thunders at Chiddingly (through IGI) and a place called Thunder's Hill nearby. I'd like to try and trace the family back from Carter Thunder and see if there's a link to these earlier Chiddingly Thunders. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks. 3. Judith, Carter is actually in the GRO index as registration started in Autumn 1837. He is listed in the 1st quarter of 1839 - Brighton vii 182 and this will give you some useful detail when you obtain the certificate.
