Dear Listers, I am running into the proverbial brick walls in trying to track down young men in my tree who may well have been casualties in the First and Second World Wars (and possibly even a Boer War one). Where I don't know the regiment but am just guessing they joined up, is there any way I can try to find them listed anywhere? Ancestry has some information, but mainly to do with medals and pensions. In particular, I have a potential death in India in 1940 (shown in Ancestry from someone's tree on the One World Tree, but not contactable). I think from another entry made by (I think) the same person that the information is good, but I just don't know how to check it out. The death isn't listed in the complete deaths record for 1940. Were there separate records kept somewhere for war casualties? Any suggestions will be gratefully received. Regards, Eleanor Dilley Melbourne 11833
Eleanor, I assume that you have tried The Commonwealth War Graves Commission to see if they get a mention? http://www.cwgc.org/ But I'm not sure if they cover India? Nothing to lose by trying though. For India have you tried FIBIS. http://www.fibis.org/index.html Judy Excell, SFHG 26 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Warwick & Eleanor Dilley" <dilleywe@bigpond.net.au> Cc: "SFHG LIST" <sfhg@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 18, 2008 11:54 PM Subject: [SFHG] Two World Wars > > Dear Listers, > > I am running into the proverbial brick walls in trying to track down > young men in my tree who may well have been casualties in the First > and Second World Wars (and possibly even a Boer War one). Dear Listers, Many thanks to all those who replied to me so promptly. I feel a bit foolish for not thinking of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, but I suppose everyone has to come across it for a first time! Thanks also to Judy for this suggestion of FIBIS, which I hadn't come across either. Thanks again and regards, Eleanor. Hi There is also a CD called 'Soldiers Died in the Great War', which gives brief details of where men joined up - it is searchable by this and other categories. Obviously many joined up a long way from the place they lived, but if you know where they were born this can also be searched.
