Alan: Sorry for delay in replying to your message but my e-mail provider has been out for some days and then I had to clear about 200 SPAM messages. Your information about Mary Ann Dyer being a widow at marriage and being born Mary Ann Sample daughter of Paul Sample confuses things. It puts out of the picture the 2 Mary A Dyer cooks (Clifton 1881 and Weybridge 1871) as both are listed as unmarried. I can find no Paul Sample listed in England or Scotland censuses 1841 to 1861. The only likely Mary Ann Sample listed was born in Berwickshire at about the right time but married a Nakepeace and died soon after. I can find no English marriage of a Mary Sample to a Dyer. I cannot access marriage indexes for Scotland. Could she possibly have been married 3 times in all? The only thing I can suggest is that if she was married in church you might find more information from when the Banns were issued. Maybe an SFHG member in the Chichester area could check this out for you if you put detail of the marriage date and church on the list. Regards, John Cain 10370
