An online dictionary (Old Occupations) gives a definition for 'Marshall' as 'horse doctor' or 'shoe smith'. Not so romantic as thinking they were the local sherriffs! Do any of the family continue the trade in later censuses? I also have family from that area who were iron founders, so may have had a hand in the horseshoes.
