    3. I have to say that I am a computer professional, and Roger's advice is sound and the way we operate at work. However, at home I have purchased a laptop and a PC, both with Vista, in the last 6 mths and haven't had any trouble with either of them so far. Vista is quite a bit different from XP, so expect to spend a bit of time getting used to where things are. I found it very easy to get onto the internet through my router but setting up a home network with the laptop wasn't as straightforward as XP. Professional knowledge hasn't been needed so far - the system has worked fine from day one and is easier to back up and restore than XP ever was. In my opinion Vista is far better than XP, and for once Microsoft seem to have got it pretty stable first time. If you're buying new from most places, you'll have no option but to go with Vista, and you can buy support if you want (though there are some good forums on the internet that will give you all the help you need for free). You might be able to find a supplier who will build your Laptop on demand and can still provide XP, but I doubt it. I wouldn't consider installing XP yourself, unless you're very confident in that sort of thing. The point about memory is a good one - 2Gb Ram is a minimum for the system and any packages you are using to run smoothly. Go for 3Gb if you can afford it (I have 3 Gb on the laptop and it is very fast).
