I have reached a point in my researches where new names that have any direct link to my direct lines are drying up. So now I must look for further detail regarding my ancestors. My grandmother spoke to me occasionally of my grandfather being robbed of his inheritance. Which I dismissed for many years, in fact until October 2007 when I obtained copies of his grandparents wills. Grandad was William Austen born Horsham 6/10/1884-14/01/1964 the only child of his parents. William Austin b 31/12/1857 at the Holmbush Inn Faygate and Ellen Rapley b30/8/1857 at Hook, Itchingfield WS It may be of interest to note that my g grandfather was illegitimate as he was born 24 days before his parents marriage. He also predeceased his parents.Dying of Apoplexy in February 1902. I have often wondered if his occupation of maltster was a contributory factor. His parents were William Thomas Austin born Yapton 1834, and Betsy Jenner born Faygate 14/01/1832. At the time of their marriage WTA was a brewers carter, Betsy was an innkeepers daughter.Marrying Betsy was of material benefit to WTA as he was given first option to take over the lease of the Inn in the will of his father in law (William Jenner 1793-1863).What is surprising is that this was done despite Betsy being one of the younger children. At the death of WTA 16/1/1909 in Horsham although there were bequests of various amounts to his children, with the usual condition that if they predeceased him (his will was dated 1905) their share was to be given to their children. Nothing was left to William(1857) who died before the will was written, or his widow who died in poverty of Chronic Chilblains, whilst in Service in 1917 or to my grandad. From Betsy who died in 1913 grandad received 20 pounds and the acknowledgement that he was her grandson. this however was considerably less than a full share of her estate, and still nothing for his widowed mother. So it could be construed that grandad was indeed robbed of his inheritance. Which raises the question, why? Was my gg grandmother the good time that was had by all. And WTA the bunny that married her to salvage her tattered reputation for a consideration. Was WTA a dog who had to be dragged into a shotgun marriage, or what, how can I prove or disprove my line of descent on this line. I`ve seen a photo of one of grandads uncles and there appeared to be some resemblance, but that may only be wishfull thinking. Regards Joe Austen 9934 in the good old land of OZ
