I can offer two supporting examples of delayed marriages. And one is a Miles! Elizabeth Rhoda Nicholls was born in 1872. In 1890 as Rhoda Elizabeth Nicholls she married James Henry Stoner and in 1918 as Elizabeth R Stoner married William Miles. The second m/c says widowed but James Henry's death has not been found. Four Stoner births occurred 1904-1912, two with Miles as a second forename and two others with 'M'. The last birth has mother's maiden name Nicholls, as does one certificate, father unspecified. The others have not been seen. The second example has births from 1930-1955 and the marriage was not until 1980. The husband had married in Malta and then separated from his first wife. My Great Grandmother Rose Ella Nicolls had a sister named Rhoda born in 1872 in Sedlescombe. I was wondering if this is the same Rhoda you mention as I know nothing more about after her christening. Mel, Elizabeth Rhoda Nicholls was born in Brighton District 4Q1872 Births Dec 1872 Brighton 2b183. She married first in Brighton and then the family moved to Leeds. The 1881 census shows in Deptford a large family of Nicholls including Rhoda D born Sedlescombe, aged 8, parents James Geo. and Charlotte. No Rose. 1901 has in Lewisham Rhoda L Nicolls, aged 28, born Sedlescombe, mother Charlotte, with sister Elizabeth J, born 1868, Robertsbridge. Both daughters are dressmakers. This Rhoda's birth was registered as Rhoda Lillie Nicolls, no 'h' 4Q1872 Battle 2b 48. Don't know if any of these are yours. According to the useful desktop aid www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/places/regindex1-3.pdf Sedlescombe was in the Battle District so no obvious connection with Elizabeth Rhoda.
