Hi Listers Yesterday I was given a family bible my parents found when sorting through my grandmother's loft in Newhaven, East Sussex. Unfortunately for me it doesn't belong to our family! It must have already been in the loft when my grandparents moved into the house in around 1965. We believe they bought the house from an unmarried lady whose name was also different to the two family names mentioned in the bible, so it probably belonged to some previous owner. The house was probably built around the late 1920s or early 1930s. The last entry in the bible was made in 1923. I'm hoping I can find its rightful home with a descendent of the family it belonged to... Here's what I have gleaned from the entries in the bible cross-referenced with census and BMD records: * The bible was published in 1859 and signed by the original owner, Robert GREEN, in 1860 * Robert was born 12 Apr 1817 in Emsworth, Sussex (right on the Hampshire border) and died 2 Apr 1898 in Lewes RD, Sussex * He was a sail maker and later a wood merchant * Robert married Hannah STANDEN in Westbourne RD, Sussex, Q1 1841 * Hannah was born 15 Jul 1815 in Petersfield, Hampshire and died 10 Jan 1897 in Lewes RD, Sussex * As far as I can see they had 3 children: * Mary Ann was born 9 Jul 1840 in Westbourne, Sussex and died 10 Sep 1899 (place unknown) * Henry was born 21 Jun 1852 in either Emsworth or Arundel, Sussex and died 13 Sep 1912 in Newhaven RD, Sussex * Henry was a sail maker * Alice was born 14 Aug 1857 (I think it's 1857, it's hard to read and I can't find a BMD record) and died 18 Sep 1923 (place unknown) * In the 1841 census parents and Mary Ann were living in Westbourne, Sussex * In the 1851 census parents and Mary Ann were living in Worthing, Sussex * In the 1861 census parents, Henry and Alice were living in Newhaven, Sussex * In the 1871 census parents and Henry were living in Newhaven, Sussex * In the 1881 census parents and Henry were living in Newhaven, Sussex * In the 1891 census parents, Henry and Alice were living in Newhaven, Sussex * By the 1901 census Robert and Hannah had died and Henry and Alice were living in Newhaven, Sussex If anyone knows anything that might help trace the rightful owners of this bible I'd be very grateful.
