Debbie wrote "Godalming and the neighbourhood had its patent fleecy hosiery, its works for wool-combing, for blankets, tilts, and collar-cloths." Now to find out what a "tilt" was... My modern Colllins dictionary gives the noun 'Tilt' as an awning or canopy usually canvas, for a boat, booth etc [Old English 'teld' ] I should mention that daily I am getting at least one of the list entries going in my 'junk email folder' . I can't see any reason for this. Is it to do with wording in the subject line ? Margaret #5836
At least until the 1960s, showmen who ran funfairs called the canvas covers of the rides 'tilts'. Tony 9967 Petersfield On 06/03/2008, M. Margaret, I am finding the same. Most SFHG messages end up in the correct inbox but almost every day one finds its way to my spam box. I cannot see any difference in the way the message is addressed, so I am equally bemused. Gordon Smith (8479) ----- Original Message ----- From: "M. Margaret, Having just sent my first message, I have, I think, worked out the difference in address - but I am not expert enough to be able to advise how to overcome the problem. The message that did not get through this morning was addressed to "M.Major" while those that did were addressed to SFHG@rootsweb.com. I wonder if everyone replying to a message should adopt this address rather than a personalised one. Perhaps someone more expert than I could comment on this suggestion.
