    3. Hi Graham I can't explain why a child would be baptised in both C of E and RC churches unless there was some conflict of religion in the family. Perhaps the idea was to give the child the opportunity to follow either religion by covering both bases! However the situation is by no means unique and still occurred in the 20th century. My mother in law was baptised THREE times. The first time in the C of E parish church in 1911 and then in 1915 in the local RC church and then again in the local RC church in 1917. She then went on to be married in the C of E parish church and all her children were baptised C of E. Her husband who came from a seriously protestant family, predeceased her and in her old age she lived in sheltered accommodation where she was happy to receive visits from representatives of all the Christian religions (again keeping all bases covered!!). Before she died she requested that her funeral should take place in the local RC church. The only possible explanation for this was that her grandmother came from Kilkenny in Ireland and so probably was Catholic. This grandmother was still alive when my mother in law was born but in her eighties and so perhaps as the matriarch she exerted some pressure on her son to get his daughter baptised as a catholic. During this period some of her siblings were also baptised as catholic when of school age and the only reason for the second RC baptism that I can think of is that her parents forgot that she had already been baptised as a catholic. I wondered if someone could offer an explanation for these entries from the Hampshire Marriage Index? 26 Oct 1829 Winkworth John Noyce Frances Otterborne 25 Oct 1829 Winkworth John Noyce Frances Brambridge & Highbridge RC They appear to have married in the RC church one day and again in the parish church the next day – I can’t imagine either priest would be best pleased!
