My paternal great-grandmother, Harriet Morris, was born in Hensfield, Ashburnham, Sussex on 30 Jul 1841, I believe. This date of birth was on her death certidicate 13 Nov 1916 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. I am trying to determine who her parents were. I located a 1861 census indicating that her father was Thomas Morris with a sibling of Edward Morris and Harriet's age as 18 (DPB about 1953) However, my cousin, has her father as George Morris, mother Mary Ann Fordick, and a sibling of Mary Ann Morris born 1846. The family immigrated to Canada and then Michigan. Harriet is listed on the passenger list with her husband Henry Charles Shaw. I can't read it well enough to tell if Mary Ann was included. There are other people listed in that group, but the handwriting is too poor to read. Are those lists transcribed anywhere so I can read it better? We all remember hearing about Aunt Mite, aka Mary Ann Fordick. No mention was ever made of a brother Edward. My cousin obtained the date of birth and parent's names from Harriet's death certificate. Am I to assume that the 1861 census I had with her father as Thomas Morris is wrong? It seems to me that information on a death certificate would be pretty accurate. Are there any parish records I could check on? What else can I do to determine Harriet's parents and perhaps grandparents? Any help much appreciated. Thank you Dinah Penn Shaw
