    3. karen, It means old style and new style dates. The calendar was changed in the 1700s from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar and 11 days were missed as an adjustment. The old [Julian] year for example meant that the year went from March to March so that 10 January 1730 was after March 31 1730. Also the new year which used to start in March now began in January.
