I am researching two groups of WOOLGAR's who lived in SE Hampshire and Western Sussex in the 17th Century. The first of these WOOLGAR groups appears in Havant, HAN circa 1650 and sometimes used an alias of ANVILL or HANVILL. This family is very well connected. Descendants marry into the LEWINGTON, SANDHAM and GRIFFITHS families: they had extensive ownership of land, left many wills proved in the PCC and impressive MI's, especially those at Petworth and East Dean by Chichester, both in Sussex. The second group also appears in Havant, HAN, but in circa 1615. They appear to be closely connected with the SOANE or SONE family, with three intermarriages in two generations; and there are also marriages into the WOODER and LAVINGTON families. They may also be connected with the HARRIS family of Donnington, SSX, but this is much more vague at the moment. There is a William WOOLGAR in this group who purchased the Manor of Flood in Havant after the Restoration; there are also several PCC wills, but no MI's have been found so far. No connection has been found between these two family groups, try as I might! There are obvious similarities in the status of both groups and the WOOLGAR's are nowhere near as heavily represented in this area as they are elsewhere, e.g. the Adur Valley parishes, at this date. That all makes me want to persevere and see if a link can be found between them. I may need to widen my research next winter into the SOANE and HARRIS families in the hope that a connection may become apparent. Meanwhile, does any member of this List have any information on any of the above family names, within roughly the same geographical area and particularly the 17th Century, that they can share with me, please?
