    3. Hello Cordelia, The transcript for Cuckfield by the Parish Register Transcription Society that have supplied most parish transcripts for SFHG has 01/01/1797 NORMAN Ann Inf. So an infant it is. There is a gap in your NORMAN baptisms between 1793 and 1797 so Ann was either baptised elsewhere, or the church official perhaps failed to enter it from the day book and so missed from the PR and perhaps even the BT's which should be checked. 3. Hi CordeliaI have the 3rd edition of the National Burial Index (2010) .The 6 Jan 1797 burial of Ann Norman is there but with no other info. The data, however, was provided by the SFHG, so it's not surprising that the entries are the same.In my experience and as you suggest, the age & parents in this era were not generally recorded if the person was more than about one year old.Good luckChristine Jackson SFHG 397 From: Cordelia Hull via <sfhg@rootsweb.com> To: SFHG SxFamHXGrp <sfhg-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 27, 2014 1:22 AM Subject: [SFHG] Can anyone check a burial record for me, please I am hoping someone can check a burial record for me.  It is for an Ann Norman buried in Cuckfield on 6 Jan 1797. Both the LDS website and Ancestry.com have this Ann Norman as aged 0 years.  However the sfhg frontis database has no age recorded for her, and no mention of her being the 'daughter of' anyone (which is usually the case for infant deaths). Neither can I find a baptism record for an Ann Norman in Cuckfield in 1795, 1796 or 1797 (this might be expected if she died there as an infant in Jan 1797). A whole family of Normans was baptised in Cuckfield between 1784 and 1798, the children of Martin and Ann Norman.  But their daughter Ann was baptised on 8 Oct 1786 so would have already turned 10 by 6 Jan 1797.  I don't think the burial record belongs to her. It does not belong to Martin's wife Ann because she did not die until 1815. So I'm thinking (hoping) it might belong to Martin's mother (also called Ann) who would have been 73 in 1797 and may well have been living with her son and daughter-in-law at the time. I would therefore be very grateful if anyone can add to my knowledge of this burial record. 3. Hi Donna, Probably the best place to try and find this treatise to enquire at The British Library which may have a complete copy. Another line of enquiry would be to enquire of whichever University Chowne attended - if he did - starting firstly at such College Library. Three further thoughts: Lambeth Palace Library, Canterbury Cathedral Library or The Bodleian Library might come up with the goods. 3. The first 4 census entries for your family show Sussex Petford as the place of birth; and for the children James & Jane, the entry is Sussex Bat & Ball. As you have found Henry's baptism in Northchapel, perhaps Petford is Petworth as the latter is just down the road from Northchapel? Bat and Ball brings no settlement to mind in West Sussex, but there is a pub called The Bat and Ball in Wisborough Green where I once had a very good lunch. The A272 is a very old West-East route through Sussex and the stretch between Petworth & Billingshurst passes through Wisborough Green. Could Henry WARE have been a seasonal worker who travelled around or through that North West corner of West Sussex as work became available? There is also a place called Bat & Ball in Kent, just outside Sevenoaks. Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex SFHG Member No: 3323

    1. [SFHG] Wares of Northchapel
    2. Gerald Peskett via
    3. Hello listers,I'm working on my Ware branch of the family and have traced them back to Northchapel. I've two items I was looking for help on. I believe I found a family on the 1871 census has Henry Ware born ????? Sussex abt 1828 with his wife Eliza living in Brasted Surrey.  Listed with him are Henry 14, Ellen 11, James and Jane Ware both age 8 with birth location of ?????? Sussex. Also are children Elizabeth and George both born in Cranbrook Kent.  Would anyone be able to tell me what the birth locations are supposed to be.The Ancestry page listing is Class: RG10; Piece: 924; Folio: 19; Page: 8; GSU roll: 823499 The couple in question are Henry Ware and Elizabeth Pannell, married in Haslemere Surrey in 1856. Elizabeth had had a couple of illegitimate children prior to marrying Henry.  Henry was from Northchapel and worked as an agricultural labourer.  Judging from his children's birth location Henry would travel around Sussex, Surrey and Kent working where he could.  I've managed to trace him through the census periods of 1841-1911, so I'm good there. With the help of the SFHG data Archive I found that Henry Ware was baptized on Dec 14 1828 in Northchapel, parents William Ware and Elizabeth Balchin.  This generation I'm good with using the Data Archive and SMI I think I've got it covered. William Ware was baptized in Northchapel on Christmas Day 1875, parents William Ware and Lydia.  I can find no listing of a marriage for this couple with the exception of one in Manchester in 1780, which would work with his children being born 1784 and after.  The marriage listing for the Manchester William and Lydia identifies William as a soldier, so it is possible this is William from Northchapel.  The baptisms for his children do not provide any clue as to his occupation. Tthe baptism listings for Northchapel for the mid 1700's has very few Wares included.  They are all children of Henry Ware and Sarah and included in those is William Ware baptized Feb 2 1758, whom I assume to be the one that married Lydia.  Earlier than this point there are no Wares in Northchapel.  After the baptisms of Henry and Sarah's children there are burials for a couple of there children and also one for Sarah in 1765.  There is no marriage listing for Henry and Sarah in the SMI, so I assume they married out of county.  I have been unsuccessful finding it.  There is a listing for a second marriage of Henry to Sarah Cobby in 1766. I wondering if anyone has any thoughts how I can find the missing marriage and how I can continue further back. Many thanks,Gerald Peskett 13311Ontario Canada

    2. Cordelia Hull via
    3. Can anyone tell me if there was some kind of 'special relationship' between Keymer and Itchingfield in the 17th century? I have a couple of ancestral families whose children were baptised in Keymer, with a note saying 'residence Itchingfield'. Plus an unconnected couple who were married in Itchingfield then moved to Keymer. The connections between these two places on my family tree are becoming too many for coincidence now, so I am wondering if anyone knows of any wider connection? Cordelia 14526

    3. Rex, my guess is that Liddy might appear as Elizabeth or Betty in later life, and Hetty as Easter or Hester or Henrietta or . . . And they could have died in infancy or childhood. Have you checked local burial registers? As a Stamp Tax of 3 pence had to be paid on all church CMB from Oct 1883 for about a decade, they may have been "privately" buried, so no parish record exists. Or the family could have moved to a different parish . . . Ian C.
