    1. [SFHG] Ancestry: Death Indexes 2007 to 2013
    2. Marion Woolgar via
    3. A new index has appeared on Ancestry for Deaths between 2007 to 2013, but I'm not sure where the information has come from. At first, I thought it was the GRO Death Indexes, which would mean that this new information would complete the Death Indexes from 1837 to 2013, but this is what Ancestry has to say about it: "About England and Wales, Death Index, 2007-2013 This index provides death details for people in England and Wales, specifically their name and title, gender, postcode, date of birth or age at death, and date of death." Also: "Source Information Ancestry.com. England and Wales, Death Index, 2007-2013 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014. Original data: British Death Indexes. Various sources." Of course, all this vagueness makes me wonder just how reliable the data is going to be. I wonder if some of it has come from the new probate registry web site, but then, why stop at 2013? Any ideas? Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex SFHG Member No: 3323

    2. Lesley Instone via
    3. Hello Diana I've deleted your original message about a death of an English person outside England and can't recall what country the person died in - somewhere in Africa perhaps? Just remember that not every British person dying outside the UK had their death registered with the British authorities (and that if there was any Scottish connection this may have been with the Scottish authorities not the England & Wales ones). It all depended on what the family wanted and what the local system in the area where the death occurred was. So have you checked the records in the locality of the death? I have a relative of one of my Scottish ancestors whose death is recorded on a headstone in Scotland as having died in a mining accident in Rhodesia (early 1900s I think) but I don't have his death recorded in the Scottish records. I presume that there was an adequate registration system in that part of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe probably) at the time at least as far as the British and other European residents were concerned. 3. East Grinstead parish is very fortunate in having a large archive of poor law records deposited at WSRO (ref: PAR 348/33/1). They are transcribed & indexed in "Mid-Sussex Poor Law Records 1601 to 1835" by Norma Pilbeam & Ian Nelson, published by the Sussex Record Society as Volume 83 in 2001, ISBN 0854450505. This book is now out of print, but you might find a library copy. This book includes eight 19th Century Apprenticeship Agreements dated between 1802 and 1825. Contact me off-List if you would like a scan of that particular page. The same records are also included in a CD by Michael Burchall. This is entitled "Eastern Sussex Settlement Certificates & Bonds 1651-1834 & Parish Apprentices 1575-1837" and it was published by the PRTS under ref: PRTS-SXXSC. The CD can be obtained from the SFHG Bookstall at http://www.sfhg.org.uk/pubs-12.html#SCPA ; or via the Parish Chest web site at www.parishchest.com . I am trying to find Penfold babies dying 1842 - c.1870 in Shermanbury. I know from a Shermanbury headstone that a particular Penfold family had 8 children buried as infants but I only have names and dates for five of them. So, can I re-arrange the set to display by surname or do I need to go through each page individually searching for Penfold. As "P" is near the end, then I generally go to "last" page and work backwards 4 or 5 at a time... In your case the Penfold name is on page 8 and there are nine of them. Good luck! 3. Cordelia, you can check these & other names on FreeBMD by clicking on Births & deaths together- hold down 'shift' key. key in 1840 - 1870 & choose Steyning district. Compare these results with any names you know or those on censuses. Family search again will help to see whose children were yours by checking their birth baptism lists which will often also give Parents & death year  or residence if not an early death.Wendy On Thursday, 8 January 2015, 12:16, wendy miles via <sfhg@rootsweb.com> wrote: While you wait for a reply Cordelia, I found these on Family Search.org  England Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991         Eliza Penfold    burial: January 1850 Shermanbury, Sussex, England     Jane Penfold    burial: 22 June 1851 Shermanbury, Sussex, England         William Penfold    burial: 27 October 1858 Shermanbury, Sussex, England         John Penfold    burial: 26 January 1859 Shermanbury, Sussex, England    Edwin Penfold    burial: 30 September 1859 Shermanbury, Sussex, England            Elizabeth Penfold    burial: 29 March 1868     Shermanbury, Sussex, England             James Penfold    burial: 22 December 1870 Shermanbury, Sussex, Englan You may find more, hope it helps.Wendy     On Thursday, 8 January 2015, 11:45, Cordelia Hull via <sfhg@rootsweb.com> wrote:   Is there a way I can get the Data Archive burial lists to display by either surname or date, rather than by first name only? 1. [SFHG] death of a salesman?
    2. Cordelia Hull via
    3. I have a 1712 burial record which states the deceased was a 'traveller'. Does anyone know whether the term had its Romany connection in the 18th century? Or might it have something to do with his occupation (e.g. travelling tradesman or salesman)? Or did it just mean he was from another parish? A man with the same name had two children baptised in the same parish a few years earlier. I am wondering how likely it was to be the same man. Cordelia 14526
