    1. [SFHG] Quakers Records
    2. kym via
    3. I hope someone can help me find some birth & death records. I have hit a brick wall. I can trace my ancestors back to a Quaker marriage ceremony between Thomas Penneyfold a weaver, and Jane Hoggs on 25 October 1699 at Ifield, Sussex. Thomas Penneyfold was from Crawley (no father or mother was mentioned in the Quaker marriage record). Jane Hoggs was from Ifield and her father was Nicholas Hoggs, also a weaver. I can not find a birth or christening, nor a death/burial quaker or parish record for Thomas Penneyfold (Pennifold/Penifold/Penefold/Penyfold/Pennyfold) and Jane Hoggs (Hogge/Hogg/Hougg). I did find a Thomas Penifold chr 29 Nov 1663 in Fletching, father was William Penifold/Pennifold. Not sure if this Thomas is the same person. I can not found a birth or christening quaker/parish record for Thomas & Jane's three children. I have only found marriage and death Quaker records for their three children:- Nicholas Pennifold (appears never married), a weaver, died 31 May 1798, aged 94 and is buried in the Friend Burial Grounds at Ifield, so born about 1704. John Pennifold (married Hannah Neives on 21 April 1737 at Hurstpierpoint, Meeting Place) a weaver, died 7 Feb 1797, aged 90 and is buried in the Friend Burial Grounds at Ifield, so born about 1707. Mary Pennifold (Penefold) (married John Chantler 21 May 1734 Ifield Sussex), died 26 May 1789, aged 79 and is buried in the Friend Burial Grounds at Ifield, so born about 1710. I can not found a birth or christening quaker/parish record for John and Hannah(nee Neives) Pennifold's three children. I have only found the following Quaker records for their three children:- Hannah Pennifold, (married William Hounsom 27 Feb 1764) died 31 Oct 1808, aged 70, buried 6 Nov 1808 Ifield, residence Cowfold, Sussex. So born about 1738. John Pennifold, a Yeoman died 13 Mar 1825, aged 83 and is buried in the Friend Burial Grounds at Ifield, so born about 1742. Thomas Pennifold (Pennyfold) (married Elizabeth Hall 17 Nov 1767 in Worth - parish record) All Thomas & Elizabeth children born in Worth. Unable to find parish/quaker death record for Thomas & Elizabeth (they may not be quakers). I have looked online at church records for parishes around Ifield including parishes in Surrey, and at Quakers records both in Ancestry.com and Family Search, and on Frontis, but no luck in finding these missing records. It appears the Sussex & Surrey Quaker online records are incomplete (i.e. some years missing for the Dorking/Horsham areas). This may be why I can not find them online. I am from Adelaide, South Australia and I will be visiting Sussex & Surrey to do some family research in August this year. I plan to visit the East and West Record Offices, as well as SFHG. Would these offices have a complete Quaker record for this period (say 1650 to 1800) for me to look at when I visit, more than online through Family Search and Ancesrty.com? Is there anywhere else I should be looking? I need some direction. Thank you Kym Pennifold 16323

    1. [SFHG] Finding Granddad
    2. Kevin Mooney via
    3. After spending a huge amount of time searching for my Grandfather's ancestors, without success, I'm hoping somebody on the SFHG Mailing List is able to help. In short, there are two men, with different names, whom I believe are the same man. The only way to prove this is to find out if the age pension was paid to either of these men, at what address was it paid and are they in fact the same person. Family lore has it that, Granddad Albert Edward Oner (c1879-1955) changed his name and age when he joined the army in 1897, there is no trace of his birth. From that date forward I have fairly good records, including his marriage, death and army service records. I also have information from Uncles, Aunties, Cousins as well as my own experience, as I knew him when I was a little lad. A few years ago, whilst going through my late Mother's family papers and photos, I came across a birth certificate for Alfred Honor born (1881-??), there is no trace of his marriage or death. The date of application for the certificate was 1946, the year Alfred turned 65! Could it be that after a long army career as Albert Oner he had to prove his identity in order to receive the pension? My Father says, "he had difficulty getting his pension, it took him a while". Cheers, Kevin

    3. Some of the mist is beginning to clear ... Ancestry have changed their web page at http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=60630 to include the following information about this new index: " Original data: GreyPower Deceased Data. compiled by Wilmington Millennium, West Yorkshire. This collection is a compiled index that covers approximately 55% of the total deaths that occured in this time period. This index provides death details for people in England and Wales, specifically their name, gender, date of birth or age at death, date of death, and residence place at death. However, they do not include the General Register Office (GRO) reference information." There is some extra explanation on another web site at http://www.irishgenealogynews.com/2015/01/source-information-for-ancestrys-n ew.html - you may have to copy and paste that URL to access the correct page. 2. Marion Woolgar via
    3. One of my husband's close relatives died in 2013. In the Ancestry entry, her date of death is correct. However, her birth year is obviously calculated using her age at death, because it is shown as 1916, when it was actually 1915; she has been given the title of "MS" (which she hated) and titles are never given in GRO indexes; her residence when she died is "Worthing, Norfolk, England" although she lived in Worthing, West Sussex; and there is a partial post code BN11 that was accurate. There is a Worthing in Norfolk, but not one with a BN11 postcode. The date of death might have been extracted from the probate registry web site; but the rest of the information must have come from somewhere else. I wondered if it might have been collected from her death notice in the local newspaper, as that gave her correct age, but that used the Christian name by which she was commonly known and the Ancestry entry uses her full birth Christian names. Until the proper sources for this data are declared, I will be giving this Ancestry database a wide birth because it is giving some misleading data, as shown in this example.
