My apologies for a typo in my note below. As Neal pointed out to me, I typed "William Ward", instead of "Richard Ward" in Page 2. She was the widow of Richard Ward (1724 - 1799), and as far as I know they did not have any children. The only marriage I can find that could fit is a clandestine marriage at the Fleet, July 19th 1749, of Richard Ward to Mary Bailey. The marriage record has no further details, not even their place of residence, so I would really like to find some other evidence of Mary's maiden name. Her will (which is on Ancestry) mentions a number of individuals, but its very hard to correctly transcribe their names. The first name of interest is in the 5th line where she says "and I give and bequeath unto my Cousin William Dent (?) of Westgrinstead in the county aforesaid (Sussex) husbandman.." I cannot find a William Dent born in the right period anywhere in Sussex, and there is no William Dent in the SMI. As it happens I already have a William Dent from a later period on my tree as I have a Kate Ward marrying a William Dent in Brighton in 1891, but this William Dent came all the way from Northumberland and his parents came from there too. A couple of lines later Mary Ward says "unto Mary ----- the wife of Allen ---- of Ditchling in the said county plumber and glazier the sum of fifty pounds", then she says "and unto John ---- --- of Hurstpierpoint. Can anyone help me to correctly transcribe these names (and any others in the will they care to look at!)? Hello Neal The SFHG website lists this will as being in their will depository from which transcripts can be obtained. I think William Dent is of Westmeston and John is John Friend late of Hurstpierpoint. Sorry I cannot decipher the surname of Allan and Mary. Hope this helps Janice 2374 On 23/02/15 17:44, Neal Ward via wrote: > Dear Listers, > > > > I'm having great difficulty with the handwriting in the 1802 will of Mary Ward of West Grinstead. Unfortunately our Speaker from Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is unable to come on Wednesday evening to give the talk about the Airfield. We have managed to obtain an alternative speaker at very short notice. Our new speaker will be Les Mitchinson who will talk to us about : Wills Pre 1858 - Searching for a will proved in one of the many probate courts. Les is a professional genealogist and has spoken to us before. Roy Winchester Chairman SFHG Chichester

Hi JohnIn case you haven't already checked the Sx Marriage Index, the parents of Stephen Harman Sisley are probably the following:Samuel Sisley marr Elizabeth Harman 16 May 1819 Guestling (no other details provided)It's interesting that the name Sisley, as you probably know, only seems to appear in Sx in the parts bordering on Kent. There are no other Stephens in the SMI.Good luck!Christine JacksonSFHG 397 From: John Sisley via <sfhg@rootsweb.com> To: SFHG-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, February 23, 2015 7:29 AM Subject: [SFHG] Sisley - Help Required I am wondering if someone is able to help me. I am trying to find the parents of Stephen SISLEY who was born in Tenterden circa 1835. In the 1881 census he is shown to be living in Susans Road, Victoria Terrace, Eastbourne with his wife Maria also born in Tenterden in 1839. His occupation was shown to be a wheelwright. I have in my records two burials at St. Mary's Church, Eastbourne: Ann SISLEY buried on 29th August 1878 (aged 52 / born 1826). Stephen SISLEY buried on 6th October 1886 (aged 51 / born 1835) Both burial records show the wording "Union House" I assume Stephen and Ann were man and wife. As Ann died in 1878 it would appear that Maria was Stephen's second wife. I cannot trance any record of either of Stephen's marriages or the death of Maria SISLEY. I have managed to trace a Stephen Harman SISLEY born in 1833 baptised in Guestling Green (not Tenterden). His father was a wheelwright. I am not confident that this is the Stephen I am trying to trace. The Events Team has now chosen a venue for our next SFHG Family & Local History Fair. It will be held on Saturday 21 May 2016 from 10am to 4pm at The Steyning Centre, please see http://thesteyningcentre.co.uk for more details about the venue. We have booked both halls at The Steyning Centre and it is a larger venue than the one that we used at Fishbourne in 2014, so we hope to attract a wider range of exhibitors. More information will be available via our web site and Journal closer to the event; but, in the meantime, please make a note of the date in your diaries. I am posting this advance notification of the event because I received some feedback following the Fishbourne fair in 2014 from Members who both live in the UK at some distance from Sussex and also from those who live overseas. It was pointed out to me that those Members sometimes have to plan their visits to Sussex up to a year in advance and that they would welcome advance notification of future events. It was a fair point and well-made and has been taken on board. Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex SFHG Member No: 3323

Does anyone have a photo or list of those first world war employees of the railway company who are commemorated at Brighton station? I would like to know if Frederick Hedger is in the list of names. He was in the Royal Sussex Regiment, and tomorrow is the 100th anniversary of his death. He was brought up in Rudgwick, where his father was the Tismans Common blacksmith. Unfortunately, his name is not on the Rudgwick memorial. Frederick moved to Brighton where he and his wife had 2, possibly 3 children. Rudgwick has a Great War Project to find out about all those who served in the war, whether killed or not, and welcomes any feedback if members of SFHG have any serving relatives who lived in Rudgwick at any time.
