    3. karen, It means old style and new style dates. The calendar was changed in the 1700s from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar and 11 days were missed as an adjustment. The old [Julian] year for example meant that the year went from March to March so that 10 January 1730 was after March 31 1730. Also the new year which used to start in March now began in January. 3. Hi Diana, I had major problems with FTM 2014 around March last year not long after I first loaded it, like yourself I made lots of calls to Ancestry FTM help desk, they suggested several things to try but not being a whiz kid with computers I got completely lost. Luckily I finally spoke to a girl at Ancestry who was most helpful, she spent about an hour talking me through various screens before reloading FTM2014 once more and it has been OK since then. There have been a couple of updates since last March so have you checked that you are running the latest version? Other than that Diana I am sorry but I can't be of much help. Good luck and I hope you can get it sorted; perhaps someone else who reads your email may be able to help. 2. Cordelia Hull via
    3. Brilliant. Thank you so much, Steve. I have gathered some other 'evidence' to support the notion that the kid baptised in Keymer on 9 April 1749 was John not James (see below). I was going to use these arguments in my tree if I could not resolve the problem. But if you can check the actual record it would be brilliant. i) there is another James born to the family 11 years later, with no record of 'Jas' being buried in the meantime ii) the sfhg transcriber seems to have made another error in transcribing another baptism in this family (Martha/Martin) iii) the name John is often abbreviated to Jno, which could easily be mistaken for Jas if the writing was bad iv) there is a marriage for a John Norman in Keymer twenty years after 1749 but no appropriate baptism for a John Norman in Keymer earlier. None of these factors is sufficient in itself, of course, but taken together they might mean something, especially as the LDS transcriber obviously thought it was meant to be John (Jno) not Jas. Cheers and thank you, Cordelia On 26 February 2015 at 07:26, Steve Selby <grayscroft@gmail.com> wrote: > I am going to The Keep on Friday, so I will look the entry up for you at > East Sussex Record Office. > > Steve Selby > > -----Original Message----- From: Cordelia Hull via > Sent: Wednesday, February 25, 2015 8:14 PM > To: Joe Austen > Cc: SFHG SxFamHXGrp > Subject: Re: [SFHG] Was he John or Jas? > > > Yes, I do know that, Joe. 3. I am trying to discover the given name of a child baptised at Keymer on 9 April 1749. His parents were William and Ann Norman. LDS records (familysearch.org) say he was called John, and he is listed as such on Ancestry.com (which takes its data from the LDS site anyway). But on the frontis database (baptisms for St Damian and St Cosmos, Keymer) he is listed as Jas, not John. I'm looking for a possible baptism of the John Norman who married Mary Hayward in Keymer on 29 Apr 1769, but I don't want to consider this 1749 baptism if it belongs to a James not a John. I live in Oz so cannot go to Record Office to check. Can anyone help please? Cordelia 14526

    3. Cordelia, you really need to see the originals & hope the writer was on the ball. I've seen many abbreviated - Jos, Jno, Jas? often just put in as James or John when in fact it may have been Joseph or Josiah , Joshua.Don't believe all that is transcribed, sometimes it is a hard task. 1. [SFHG] Re Will of Mary Ward 1802
    2. Neal Ward via
    3. Many thanks to all those who have replied to my request. I've learned a lot, in particular that before attempting to transcribe a Will, members should consult the Wills index, which in this case shows that a transcription had already been done! However, there is still some uncertainty about some of the names in the Will, as, at the end of the day, reading difficult handwriting inevitably involves some inspiration or even guesswork. I am interested in trying to trace Mary Ward's cousin, who she names as William Dene/Dane/Dine or something similar. I thought she said he was from Westgrinstead, but those with more experience of such handwriting suggest the place is Westmeston. I would very much like to trace this cousin, as I have very little information about Mary herself - I think her maiden name might have been Bailey as there is a Clandestine Marriage of a Mary Bailey to Richard Ward in 1749, but, unlike other similar marriages at this time, no details about the bride or grooms occupation or address are given. If Richard Ward (who died in 1799) and Mary were married in 1749, they would have been together for 50 years, a extraordinarily long time for the period. However, when Mary died in 1802, her MI says she was 74 years old, ie born about 1728, so a marriage at 21 in 1749 would have been quite normal. Neal

    3. Hi All, I am hoping that someone may be able to help me break down my long standing brick wall. I am looking for the baptism and parents of Solomon Glyde. He married Mary Hyland 27th December 1759 at St Annes, Lewes. Their known children are Mary (b.1760 Salehurst), Martha (b. c1763) and William (who I descend from, b.1765 Salehurst). Solomon died 1792 Salehurst aged 65 making him born around 1727. If anyone is able to help me with this, I would be very grateful. Alan (membership 1917)

    3. Neal This will has already been transcribed. Try willstore@sfhg.org.uk Judy Excell Researching a particular Sussex name? Why not ask for all that SPI holds? -----Original Message----- From: Neal Ward via Sent: Monday, February 23, 2015 5:44 PM To: sfhg@rootsweb.com Subject: [SFHG] Help please to transcribe names in a will Dear Listers, I'm having great difficulty with the handwriting in the 1802 will of Mary Ward of West Grinstead. She was the widow of Richard Ward (1724 - 1799), and as far as I know they did not have any children. The only marriage I can find that could fit is a clandestine marriage at the Fleet, July 19th 1749, of Richard Ward to Mary Bailey. The marriage record has no further details, not even their place of residence, so I would really like to find some other evidence of Mary's maiden name. Her will (which is on Ancestry) mentions a number of individuals, but its very hard to correctly transcribe their names. The first name of interest is in the 5th line where she says "and I give and bequeath unto my Cousin William Dent (?) of Westgrinstead in the county aforesaid (Sussex) husbandman.." I cannot find a William Dent born in the right period anywhere in Sussex, and there is no William Dent in the SMI. As it happens I already have a William Dent from a later period on my tree as I have a Kate Ward marrying a William Dent in Brighton in 1891, but this William Dent came all the way from Northumberland and his parents came from there too. A couple of lines later Mary Ward says "unto Mary ----- the wife of Allen ---- of Ditchling in the said county plumber and glazier the sum of fifty pounds", then she says "and unto John ---- --- of Hurstpierpoint. Can anyone help me to correctly transcribe these names (and any others in the will they care to look at!)?
