    1. [SFHG] Elusive Stainsby/Wright family.
    2. e-mail marian.hopkins via
    3. Hi All I would like to take this opportunity to publically say a huge thank you to Marion Woolgar and Jackie Rowntree for all the info they supplied! You have both given me so much help and info and of course new avenues to explore! So thank you both very much it is really appreciated. Can I just say to anyone out there struggling with a brick wall - don't be like me! For years I hunted for my elusive family and didn't have the courage to ask my questions! I thought everyone would be too experienced and busy to respond to my novice queries - how wrong I was! I have been overwhelmed by the responses, knowledge, help and advice I have received over the years from all the great members we have here in SHFG. So don't be concerned about asking 'basic' questions! - I must have asked so many that must have made people smile over the years but all were answered! I must admit that I have found out why the GRO couldn't find any trace of Ruth Barnett from the info I supplied - yes you have guessed it! I forgot one of the golden rules of genealogy... names are often spelt differently or transcribed wrongly ete etc! I will now attempt to obtain the cert for Ruth Burnett so fingers crossed! Wishing you all a good weekend and thanks again Jackie and Marion! Kind regards Marian

    1. [SFHG] Cowfold monastery records?
    2. Cordelia Hull via
    3. Does anyone know if it is possible to find a list of monks who inhabited the Cowfold monastery during the 1920s and beyond? Family tradition has it that a son of my mother's great aunt became a monk at Cowfold. She had three surviving sons but there's only one for whom I can find no marriage or offspring, so I assume it was he who became the monk: Albert Eric Silvester born in 1901. I would like to: a) confirm that the rumour is true (because so many of my family traditions have so far been proved false !!) and if true, b) discover how long he stayed at the monastery and whether he died there etc. Any ideas? 1. [SFHG] TR: Newspaper Archives
    2. Mary Connaughton via
    3. Hello Chris, I agree with Tony, and what is useful with the British Newspaper Archive, although time-consuming, is that you can do your look-ups beforehand to see if there is anything and then subscribe afterwards to check it out completely. I have a year's subscription as there was a cheap offer going last year. But before that, I took out a monthly subscription every now and again, which was only about £10. You need to do it when you're sure that you've got time to actually do the research. I assure you that it's really interesting to read "old" newspapers. If you're "lucky" enough to have an ancestor who got into trouble with the law, there are sometimes very lengthy descriptions of the offender and the crime. The court cases are very entertaining in their details - recording "laughs" during the trial etc... Even the adverts are worth looking at! Births, death and marriages are often recorded in the local papers for "ordinary" people - not just the high society ones, like in the National papers. I'd advise you to give it a try! Good luck! 3. Chris, FMP and BNA are very different - FMP is a variation on FamilySearch and Ancestry and a useful starting point to make connections and find certificates, while BNA is a comprehensive newspaper archive. I have found BNA extremely useful for information about places, events and people at different times and the archive is being added to weekly. Searching can be frustrating but often very rewarding. 3. Just a quick note for future researchers of the surname AYLING. I have posted an extensive re-examination of "The Ayling Story" by Kenneth Ayling at http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.ayling/164/mb.ashx, including providing links to all source material he referenced and correcting a number of errors in the lineage he described in the third part of his paper. This is probably the first update to this AYLING family information in 30 years. I am also doing research updates and posting at http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.ayling/mb.ashx. Thanks. 3. I think that a little more and detailed information is needed to make progress with your problem. For example: 1 They married in 1971 - was that a typo for 1871 perhaps? Or was it some other date? Where did the marriage take place? 2 Ruth died in 1940 aged 90. I've just checked the GRO indexes for all four quarters of 1940 and I can't see any entry for a Ruth STAINSBY. On what date did she die and where exactly did she die? Do you have documentary evidence for her death, or is it a family recollection? 3 She is buried in Seaford, Sussex. Is that in the churchyard of the parish church, or in a civil cemetery? Are any of her family buried with her? If so, whom? 4 When & where did her husband die? Where is her husband buried? 5 Assuming that Ruth STAINSBY nee BARNETT was born in 1850 and died in 1940, have you identified her on every Census up to and including 1911 and is her age on each one consistent with a birth in 1850. Where does she say she was born and is that consistently stated on all those census returns? Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex SFHG Member No: 3323

Regards & Thanks, Lynne From: Marion Woolgar <listmail008@btinternet.com> To: 'Lynne Howick' <ivysdaughter@yahoo.com.au>; SFHG@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, 27 September 2015, 18:12 Subject: RE: [SFHG] HOWICK / RELPH or RELF In addition to the suggestion from Christine Jackson re Wisborough Green, you might like to take a look at the parish of Fernhurst (sometimes spelt Farnhurst).  The Sussex Marriage Index shows a large cluster of marriages there (plus some associated Licences) and they are regularly spaced from the mid-16th century to the early 19th Century.  The Fernhurst baptisms & burials are on the SFHG Frontis site. There are also eight wills proved in Chichester Archdeaconry up to 1800, including three from Fernhurst and two from Wisborough Green.  I can send you a copy of the page off-List if you would like to have it and the wills have been filmed by the LDS, so you ought to be able to view them at your local Family History Centre.  The Wiki on the FamilySearch web site will provide extra details.  You will find more HOWICK wills that were proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury pre-1858 and these can be found on Ancestry and also on the TNA web site. As you have firm evidence that your family lived in Easebourne at one time, it is possible that they lived on land within one of the  various Cowdray Manors which had extensive holdings in that part of Sussex.  These records can be a little difficult to use, but they are an extra source of information to use in conjunction with parish register entries.  The Cowdray volumes have been deposited at WSRO and most have now been filmed.  Before 1733, the records are written in Latin except for the Commonwealth period of 1649 to 1660.  However, there is often a contemporaneous surname index within each Court Book that will direct you to particular folios and it is comparatively easy to pick out names and places within a particular paragraph.  I have used these records in the past to sort out research problems relating to my husband's family who also lived in this part of Sussex.
