Hi Everyone Can anyone tell me what a Nurse child is relating to a family? If the child was very young I'd think it was a nursing baby but the one I am querying is age 6. I am sure there is such simple explanation. Thanks Jean in Wiltshire 10774
I could do that look-up for you, but my next intended viist to WSRO is not until 15th March, so you may get a faster response from someone else. What intrigues me is why you have chosed Cuckfield as the possible location for her baptism? The IGI shows a baptism for an Alice POTTER 28 Jul 1857 at Brighton St. Nicholas, the daur of John & Sarah. Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex SFHG NO: 3323
Hi Daisy, The fact that two of William Reading's children were in Brighton workhouse in 1851 suggests that there had been some sort of family crisis. Perhaps William or his wife Susan had died; have you tried looking for deaths 1841-51? Where was Susan in 1851? You obviously have later information on the family which may provide a clue but you will need to track down William either in a Census or by way of a burial to find a probable identity for him. Try looking for Susan in 1851 (or a death 1841-51) which will show where she was born. Also, which children were in the workhouse? Were they younger or older children and what happened to the others - i.e, where were they in 1851. Does anyone have access to the PR's for Cuckfield that could do a look up for me please? I am looking for ALICE POTTER born about 1858/9. She appears on the 1861, 71 and 81 census living with her grandparents William and Mary Hall. Her place of birth in 61 & 81 is Horley, Surrey and on 71 is Brighton. I am thinking that her mother might have died in childbirth or very soon after and her father was unable to look after the baby so she might have been baptised in Cuckfield. I have applied for a couple of birth certificates but they were not right either I have no idea who her parents were and there is no Hall/Potter marriage on freebmd that seems right. Please help me solve this mystery Kay 6849
Hi My g*3 grandfather, William Reading, was listed on the 1841 census as living in Leicester Street, Brightron with his family: wife Susan and 6 children. He was apparently born outside of the county. Their marriage record has William's surname as Redding. Neither William nor Susan appear on the 1951 census, but 2 children are in the school of the Brighthelmstone Workhouse. The IGI shows a fair number of William Readings born about the period I estimate William to have been born (early 1800s). Is there any way that I can find out where William was born please and, thereby, hopefully take this line further back. With best wishes, Daisy
Dear Melody My grandmother was in the same home in 1901 and I got some bits of information on it. I will try and dig them out for you over the next few days - my health isn't too good though and my memory is even worse... so, if you haven't heard by mid-week do remind me. If you wouldn't mind, could you also send me the information as well. I don't have a connection to that particular place but I am interested in learning more about some of these "group homes." Hi Jennifer & Tony (and for the benefit of everyone else) No sorry, the only two family names mentioned in the bible are GREEN and STANDEN. The GREEN entries are just Robert and his children. Apart from Robert's wife Hannah, the STANDEN entries, judging from the birth dates, look to be perhaps Hannah's siblings. All the names/dates are as follows: Mary STANDEN born 2 Mar 1806, died 7 Mar 1855 Henry STANDEN born 5 Mar 1808, died ? James STANDEN born 10 June 1810, died 17 Jul 1810 George STANDEN born 11 Dec 1811, died 1 Nov 1852 Jane STANDEN born 25 Jul 1813, died ? Hannah STANDEN born 15 Jul 1815, died 10 Jan 1897 John STANDEN born 23 Oct 1816, died ? Harriett STANDEN born 17 Jan 1818, died 27 Apr 1819 Edward STANDEN born 23 Aug 1820, died 20 Sep 1864 Charlotte STANDEN born 10 May 1823, died ? Robert GREEN born 12 Apr 1817, died 2 Apr 1898 Mary Ann GREEN born 9 Jul 1840, died 10 Sep 1899 Henry GREEN born 21 Jun 1852, died 13 Sep 1912 Alice GREEN born 14 Aug 1857, died 18 Sep 1923 There is one further entry after the above list that is not legible. Some of the above dates are hard to read - these are my best interpretations! Hope this helps. Hi Listers Yesterday I was given a family bible my parents found when sorting through my grandmother's loft in Newhaven, East Sussex. Unfortunately for me it doesn't belong to our family! It must have already been in the loft when my grandparents moved into the house in around 1965. We believe they bought the house from an unmarried lady whose name was also different to the two family names mentioned in the bible, so it probably belonged to some previous owner. The house was probably built around the late 1920s or early 1930s. The last entry in the bible was made in 1923. I'm hoping I can find its rightful home with a descendent of the family it belonged to... Here's what I have gleaned from the entries in the bible cross-referenced with census and BMD records: * The bible was published in 1859 and signed by the original owner, Robert GREEN, in 1860 * Robert was born 12 Apr 1817 in Emsworth, Sussex (right on the Hampshire border) and died 2 Apr 1898 in Lewes RD, Sussex * He was a sail maker and later a wood merchant * Robert married Hannah STANDEN in Westbourne RD, Sussex, Q1 1841 * Hannah was born 15 Jul 1815 in Petersfield, Hampshire and died 10 Jan 1897 in Lewes RD, Sussex * As far as I can see they had 3 children: * Mary Ann was born 9 Jul 1840 in Westbourne, Sussex and died 10 Sep 1899 (place unknown) * Henry was born 21 Jun 1852 in either Emsworth or Arundel, Sussex and died 13 Sep 1912 in Newhaven RD, Sussex * Henry was a sail maker * Alice was born 14 Aug 1857 (I think it's 1857, it's hard to read and I can't find a BMD record) and died 18 Sep 1923 (place unknown) * In the 1841 census parents and Mary Ann were living in Westbourne, Sussex * In the 1851 census parents and Mary Ann were living in Worthing, Sussex * In the 1861 census parents, Henry and Alice were living in Newhaven, Sussex * In the 1871 census parents and Henry were living in Newhaven, Sussex * In the 1881 census parents and Henry were living in Newhaven, Sussex * In the 1891 census parents, Henry and Alice were living in Newhaven, Sussex * By the 1901 census Robert and Hannah had died and Henry and Alice were living in Newhaven, Sussex If anyone knows anything that might help trace the rightful owners of this bible I'd be very grateful. Thanks! Tony Golding (11552)
Hi Tony,I have both Green & Standen families in my line and would be interested if there is mention of the Clevett family in the bible.Thank you.Tony Clevett.
It has been reprinted (2001. ISBN 0 904889 64 5) in one volume; I think probably still in print, but expensive and the paper feels as if it is the self-destruct in fifty years sort. Judy Excell SFHG 26

Hallo All members, I did do copies of this extract 2 years ago, and sent out by post at cost, to many members who very much appreciated it. I have now found the disc with it on, and am more adept at sending attachments ! Life gets easier. If anyone would like a copy, please email me direct. I did it as extracts because the book was too complicated to copy it all. I seem remember it was reprinted in 1956 , but out of copyright anyway. The Village Labourer is on-line at: http://socserv.mcmaster.ca/econ/ugcm/3ll3/hammond/village.html I'm not sure it's that easy to read it all on-line and it would take a lot of paper to print out all 11 chapters! I tried looking at it on-line years ago and didn't get far.
