    3. Thanks very much to everyone who replied. I have now found 'Sunte Ho' just to the west of Lindfield on streetmap.co.uk. I then found it on the Old Maps site, it is not very clear due to poor resolution, but it could say 'Sunte House'. Diana

    2. Monica, You'll find that the The SMI reverse entry (searching for Morfee) has witnesses: Eler.SARGENT; John PHILLIPS which may or may not help. I don't see the SMI commenting on George's origins! 1. [SFHG] Words in a Lindfield Will
    2. Diana & Graham Stevens
    3. I am reading the 1593 will of Richard FAIREHALL. It says he lived at Sunt in Lindfield. I can't find a place with this name, does anyone have any suggestions please? There is also a strange word I can't track down. Richard is making provision for his grandson John Cox's legacy if one of the trustees (Edward Cox) dies: "The Residue of the said twenty pounds which shall then remayne to be paid unto him the said John Cox at suche tyme as he shall accomplishe the age of one & twenty yeares And my will is that yf the said Edward Cox happen to dye within the said parine?, then the said Edward Hall ..." The 'par' is clearly written (though the writer uses the normal abbreviation for 'par' in other parts of the will, for instance in parish), the rest of the letters are a bit ambiguous. Any suggestions? This is the first will I have read where the glass in the windows of the house is specifically mentioned as a legacy. I wonder how valuable glass was in 1593? Best wishes to all from Diana in Perth, Western Australia

    3. Hi All Reading your messages about Football made me remember an old photograph that has come into my possession. It's condition is not very good, as the board that it is mounted on has crumbled. It's heading is THE HELMSTON FOOTBALL CLUB 1906/7 - Sussex Junior Cup Winners 1906-7 S Young, E Lindley, R Hawkins, A Gogan, H J Richards, R Jones, W White, W B Fellingham (Hon Sec), G Bostel (Vice Capt), P O Blaber, H H Hammett (Captain), C Eacock, E W Slowley (Ass. Hon. Sec.), F Williams, J Eacock & J Simmons. George Bostel is a cousin of mine. If anyone out there is a descendant of any of one these people I would be happy to send a copy of the photo by email. 1. [SFHG] Morfee/Morfett (and variants)
    2. Hallo everyone, Can anyone tell me if Morfee and Morfett are variations of the same family name or if these are two separate families? According to the SFHG Sussex Marriages CD George Sargent ch 19/2/1747 All Saints (s/o Edward Sargent & Mary Barry) married Anne MORFEE 10/12/1771 at All Saints, but the IGI gives the marriage as between George and Anne MORFETT ch 30/11/1748 St Clements (d/o William Morfett & Elizabeth Barry). I know the IGI is not always reliable, but I cannot find a baptismal entry for Anne Morfee at the right time in the SFHG Hastings Baptisms CD so assumed that the surname should indeed be Morfett. I confess to being swayed by the fact that both George & Anne (Morfett) had a mother whose maiden name was Barry! If someone could put me right I would be very grateful... Monica 12713

    3. There is a "Sunte Avenue" and a "By Sunte" to the west side of Lindfield, north of Haywards Heath town centre, both roads running roughly east from Portsmouth Lane. This may indicate where the original Sunte House was. Try searching on Google Maps http://maps.google.co.uk/ which also has an arial photo. 1. Re: [SFHG] Words in a Lindfield Will
    2. Marion Woolgar
    3. According to the "Place Names of Sussex" by Mawer, Stenton & Gover, there was a Sunte House in Lindfield and it was first mentioned in documents in 1522. The meaning of "Sunt" or "Sunte" has been lost over time, however there is a Sunt Farm in Shipley first mentioned in 1464 and they also believe that Suntyinge is one of the early spellings for Sompting. So the use of the word as a place name in Lindfield is not unique in Sussex. Glass was a luxury product in Elizabethan times and only the wealthy had it in their windows as it was mostly imported from France & Germany. At this time, the glass had to be blown and it wasn't until 1773 that plate glass (invented in France) was produced in England at St. Helen's. If you care to send me a scan of the particular portion of the Will that you are transcribing, I will see if I can make out the word. I'm not an expert by any means, but I have transcribed a few Wills in my time and I have learnt that a second pair of eyes on the problem text never does any harm. Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex SFHG NO: 3323

    2. Thats very interesting Sue. Makes me wonder if all the Cricket/Football/Rugby/Swimming etc teams in Sussex were listed from their Club Records, it would open up a new research format. SFHG members may find someone they are searching for, at least we would know what they all did in their spare time ! Sport was just as important to our ancestors as it is to us today. Diane 10813

    3. Hi members Sussex Cricket cricketarchive.co.uk shows George Millyard as having played for Sussex between 1835-1842. It also names J(ames), W(illiam) and R(obert) Broadbridge playing for Sussex and being George Millyard's "cousins". I have no record of the Broadbridges being FIRST cousins to George Millyard. Does anyone know different? Or could they be more remote/removed "cousins"? Sussex Football Does anyone know who the George Millyard is/was who gives his name to the George Millyard Cup that the Sussex Sunday League play for? Trevor Millyard 4480

    1. [SFHG] New Zealand Census Records
    2. Bryan Pannett
    3. >John, Unfortunately my reply is very much in the negative. As far as Census information is concerned to quote from the website of the NZ Statistics Dept. "On your census form, you were asked for your name and address. They were only needed to reach you if anything was missing or if you had been selected to take part in surveys on disability or the Mäori language, which followed the census. In 2001, there was a question that asked if you gave your consent to having your individual census form archived for 100 years. The forms of those who did not give consent have been destroyed by shredding." If you are hoping to use census information to track individuals it is not available. Also NZ BDM records are not available on the internet at present. It is possible to look at the indexes at many libraries but then one has to order a certificate from the Department of Internal affairs and hope you picked the correct entry. Both the NZ Statistics Department and Internal affairs have websites which explain their policies and what is available. On a more positive note the NZ Society of Genealogists Inc provides information in certain areas to its members (www.genealogy.org.nz) Bryan Pannett (member 11480) > > >Date: Sat, 3 May 2008 09:52:49 +0100 >From: "John Sisley" <johnandmary@sisley4321.freeserve.co.uk> >Subject: [SFHG] New Zealand Census Records >To: <SFHG@rootsweb.com> >Message-ID: <000b01c8acfb$1b290120$92fa6d5b@ermintrude> >Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" > >Can anyone advise where I might be able to find >and look at the New Zealand Census Returns >covering the period of 1870 to 1910. 2. Robin Coates
    3. Hello. I am trying to trace the ancestry of my 3x great grandmother CAROLINE (KAREN) WELLER who married JESSE SHOEBRIDGE in 1803 in Hartfield; SMI has each of them as 'of this parish'. I do not know when CAROLINE was born nor who here parents were; the SMI has the marriage of a HENRY WELLER to MARCIA STAPLEY in 1775 in Hartfield so they may be a possibility. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. All the best and thanks. Robin

    1. [SFHG] WSRO Special Event 03 June 2008
    2. Marion Woolgar
    3. WSRO will be holding another special family history event on Tuesday 03 June 2008 from 7pm to 9pm. This time, the session will focus on how to research military and probate records. The Record Office receives over 12,000 enquiries a year about service in the First World War alone and army records are one of the most frequently consulted categories for genealogy. Wills and probate inventories can provide fascinating detail on the lives of our ancestors and can take their story back through the centuries. In addition, the evening will include a special presentation by a member of the Record Office conservation staff on how to look after family records - documents and photographs - to better ensure their preservation for future generations. Tickets cost £5 and must be booked in advance as numbers are limited. Phone 01243 753602 or E-mail: records.office@westsussex.gov.uk . Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex
