Hi I had this email from a Stopham Parish councilor, Brian Barttelot,... which solves the mystery of 10 Church Cottages "Until about 1980 all the cottages on the Stopham Estate were numbered from 1 to 35. So what was No 10 when the Belchambers were living here is now No 2 of the two Church cottages." Regards John Belchamber

I have been told that a great aunt died in a Methodist nursing home in or near Brighton in the 1950s. I cannot trace her death as she married twenty years previously, her husband died shortly afterwards and nobody in the family can remember her married surname (she was born Mary Grace Waters). I was wondering if anyone knew of the existence and whereabouts of the Methodist home that she allegedly was in. Thanks. Mike Waters
I recently visited Hastings Fishing Museum, near the famous Net Shops on the seafront. It is manned by volunteers, and welcomes donations. Any members unable to visit England could send them £5 to cover p&p and ask for a selection of postcards, showing the history of the people whose work it was to catch fish, which they gutted on the beach in all weathers. It must have been a terrible job in the winter. I was amazed how small the boats were, and the height of the sails they carried. The curator told me they were called 'Ten metre' boats, but there were others that were larger. Some of these boats are preserved outside the museum. Inside the museum three walls are covered with enlarged group photographs of the hundreds of fishermen who worked on these boats over many years, plus photographs and information about The Winkle Club, a social support group for all the fishermen's families. The names of the fishermen have been very carefully written, and are easily readable for visitors. I wonder whether SFHG members, who are researching relatives who lived in the Hastings area, would appreciate these names being listed, with the name of each boat they worked, and indexed. It would need volunteers, at least one for each wall. Then, using Digital cameras, the requested photograph could be copied by museum staff and sent out on line for another £5. Members would then have a picture of their ancestor, possibly with the boat he worked on. In this way they could earn donations to support the museum. Diane 10813. Also there may be lists of names of Winkle Club members.
Hi Stevens researchers I have a Mary Stvens b March 1764 Ticehurst/Etchingham, Sussex.. Parents were Richard Stevens & Mary. She married Robert Rummery at Etchingham on 5th Sept 1785. The first child (my line) was b in Etchingham then the family moved to Warehorne in Kent. Does anyone have Stevens ancestors connected this far back? (or Rummey?) Any thoughts why the family might have moved from Etchingham to tiny village on the edge of Romney Marsh? Hello Listers My ggf's sister, Elizabeth DANIEL, a single woman, made her Will in 1869. She died in 1870. She left several bequests of £10 apiece as follows: To my cousin Mrs PUTLAND To my cousin Thomas FARROLL and his wife and to his sister Maria BOSWELL and her daughter Agnes To my cousin Lois TAYLOR and her husband To my cousins Mary LEE and Maria FITZPATRICK As Elizabeth's paternal family was long-settled (of at least 300 years) in Hastings and her mother was from Norfolk, I've concentrated on children of her father's siblings as the possible cousins mentioned. It is possible that these were on her mother's side, but, given the distance, feel she wouldn't have known them so well. Mrs PUTLAND **may** be the Mary Ann VINE who married James PUTLAND (on FreeBMD he is listed as James PULLAND!) in 1849. Ann, one of Elizabeth's father's sisters had married John VINE in 1801 and had a child called Mary Ann in 1806. I've found that Mary, another of her father's sisters, married Jarvis (sometimes recorded James) FARROLL secondly (as widow FOSTER) in 1813. They appear to have had a son Jarvis (or James?) Thomas FARROLL cir 1817/8 (he was 33 in the 1851 Census, and may well have been known by his second name to differentiate him from his father. However Maria BOSWELL (sister of Thomas FARROLL) and her daughter Agnes (BOSWELL I guess) both have me stumped. Lois has been identified as Louise Jane TAYLOR née CARPENTER, the daughter of Elizabeth's father's sister Susannah. Also of difficulty are the two last listed legatees - Mary LEE and Maria FITZPATRICK. There's no indication to their marital status. I've searched the 1881 Census on-line for these names but, apart from the TAYLORs, can't find any of them. Nor could I find any likely references on FreeBMD - could be they aren't transcribed yet. Would SKS be able to give this mystery a bit of thought and point me in a likely direction to solve the puzzle, please? Many thanks. Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia

Thanks Phil for once again thinking of the Stevens researchers. I have checked your list but didn't find a connection. I've put a replacement for the 2004 CD001 SussMarr.exe on the website. See http://www.sfhg.org.uk/smi/smiqueries.html. I'll post again if representations to AVG bear fruit. Regards, Alan
Having just reformatted my drive and installed AVG, I decided to try out my copy of the SMI. It was also blocked by AVG's NEW Resident Shield that believes my old SMI harbours a Trojan file. The easiest way to get it to work is to turn off the shield. The other way was to open the Manage Exceptions (double click on Resident Shield) and press the button. I then clicked on the Add Path button, browsed to my Temp folder and added it, then ticked the box above 'Use excludes for the Resident Shield'. The CD will then run as normal. Neither of these two methods is a satisfactory way of accessing the SMI. However I think I will just disconnect from the internet and close the AVG Resident Shield for now, until AVG bring out a patch. I assume SFHG will email AVG and ask them to sort it out. Hello Pauline, It may be version dependent. I have XP Home and the 2004 CD and tried it on AVG 7.5, because some-one else was having problems with 7.5. It should be independent of the AVG level, Phil. It is our developer's original code with the only change being to include compiled Help files for compatibility with VISTA. The security code then wrapped into SussMarr.exe has changed and is the latest version which does not use the apparently offending .dll. After several years of coexistence, AVG's new Version 8 is objecting to the SMI CD. I don't know what the resolution will be but for the time being have been organising a bypass. I've added a note to the website at http://www.sfhg.org.uk/smi/smiqueries.html and some files to enable the 2005 copyright SFHGCD002 to be used. About 6MB. I have asked for a replacement SussMarr.exe file for the 2004 SFHGCD001 and when received will post here and add it to the website. Alan P.S. I managed to follow my instructions successfully. Hello John Although I don't personally know Stopham it is obviously a very small because in the 2001 census there were only 87 people living in 39 households - from Wickipedia. I've looked through the 1881 census for Church Cottages, Stopham but to no avail so I don't know when these properties would have been built. It is quite likely that these cottages are no longer there. They would probably have been next to or very near the church, which in this case, as I'm sure you're now aware, is St Mary the Virgin. My only suggestion would be to contact West Sussex Records Office as they may have more information for you. Hi John There are still numbers 1 and 2 Church Cottages in existance today. Royal Mail post code finder lists three properties all with postcode RH20 1EG , these two cottages and Church House. Looking at Old Maps does not indicate that there was much more development in Stopham than there is today. Where did you get the address of 10 Church Cottages from and what year did the address relate to?
