    3. After a whistle stop trip to Brighton this week, I located my great x 3 grandfather's (unmarked) grave in Lewes Road Cemetery. The only other fact I have about his death was that he died at 16 Sydney Street on 5 March 1871, the informant being a Harriett Higgs of Whichels Place. Please could some kind person with access to the 1871 census for Brighton tell me who was living at No. 16 on census night - I imagine it was a landlady with boarders in her house but it might give me some inkling about the premises where he died.Diana _________________________________________________________________ http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/msnnkmgl0010000009ukm/direct/01/

    3. Steve, I have just received copies of 4 wills for my £20 (I pushed the boat out!). For each I received the page on probate, value of estate etc. that you mention and a copy of the wills themselves, in my case all one page long only. When I phoned them on first contact I found them very helpful, so I suggest you might get in touch with them to clarify. Maybe there wasn't an actual will. I'll be interested to read your results. All I received was one A4 sheet containing the barest of details just summarising that his estate did not exceed £40, 000 gross or £10,000 net and that the named representative was his wife. Is this usual to get such scant information or should I contact the HMCS again and make clear that I also would like a copy of the will, detailing family members and what they were entitled to? 3. Hello Roger, Many thanks for your very informative reply. I have often wondered whether Michael WOOLGAR's shop in The Hornet was a Cokeler shop? Yes, Michael WOOLGAR is indeed buried in Chichester. His grave is in Portfield Cemetery and I have a photograph of it and a record of the inscription on the headstone. I can send these to you off-List if you would like to have copies. I also have a copy of an article about the Cokelers by Earl Winterton which was published in the "Sussex County Magazine" in 1931 (volume 5 page 717 et seq) which you might like to read, if you haven't discovered it already. Thank you, I would love to see a photo of Michael WOOLGAR. I once met an elderly Chichester resident who, as a young boy, knew him back in the 1920's. He was described to me as a man who looked like Methuselah with a long and flowing white beard. I shall be very interested to see if the photo matches the description! Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex SFHG NO: 3323

    3. Hello from NZ I wonder if anyone can find in the 1881 census a Maurice WOODHATCH b 1823 and his wife Charlotte WOODHATCH b 1832 ish. I have Maurice in the 1841 census and the both of them in the 1861, 1871, 1891 and 1901, they died in 1913 with a few months of each other. Also is there anyone that is researching the HEAD family in Sussex. While on Norfolk Island 5 years ago I saw a head stone of a Thomas HEAD a native of Sussex he might have been a sailor or transported out there, I took a photo of it but I can't find that photo now, I have now found that we have a HEAD in the family and would like to find out so if anyone can help me I would be a happy girl. Thanks Kay 8111 Christchurch NZ

    3.  Dear Marion I have two records of Woolgars, one of which is clearly the one you are interested in. Neither were buried in the Spy Lane Loxwood Chapel so these are from the death register only. It would seem that Michael's wife(s) were not deemed part of the brethren. This sometimes happens in these records, and I would not necessarily read too much into it. I expect Michael was buried in Chichester, as it was a rather distant sub-centre. In some instances local clergy refused to bury Cokelers, so we are told, again no primary evidence that I have. WOOLGAR Michael 1927 Jul-Sep ? 82 1845 Steyning Sx Chichester brother Michael Woolgar Loxwood Dependant Cokelers 2547 death date record WOOLGAR/JUPP Ella 1978 Mar 25 Ella Woolgar nee Jupp Loxwood Dependant Cokelers 3065 death date record The entry for Ella has no age at death, 25 is the date in March. The entry for Michael had year of death only. The months and age and place are my own look-up on Ancestry because he was a trustee. Michael was one of 4 named trustees of the Chichester Chapel in The Hornet in an indenture dated 24 May 1880, signed 2 March 1883 (in WSRO Acc 11283 Box 3/3), where he was referred to as grocer of The Hornet. The other trustees were named Sadler, Hart and Duke, witnessed by Green and Howick. Michael conveyed part of Joyes Croft at rear of NW side of St Pancras St, 100ft x 50ft for the building of a chapel, already constructed by 1880 or 1883. There are no West's named, but Boiing is, as below: BOILING George 1928 jan 2 Chichester brother George Boiling Loxwood Dependant Cokelers 2562 death date record BOILING Kitty 1929 jul 19 Chichester sister Kitty Boiling Loxwood Dependant Cokelers 2569 death date record BOILING Jane 1930 oct ? Chichester sister Jane Boiling Loxwood Dependant Cokelers 2585 death date record This is not a name I know anything about, but it is clearly a Chichester name. A quick flip through the registers which are in excel, but not diffentiated by place so difficult to sort by place, include: Henry Brett Sarah Drewett Ted & Ellen Goff Jane & Harry Green Hostler family Fred & Emily Hughes Sally & Jane Stracker Talbot family Walter, Harry & Fanny Hart William Sadler Not all entries have place details. There are no Grevatts (or similar spelling I am afraid. Midhurst was not a known location for Cokelers. I haven't attempted to unravel the importoant Luff clan of Northchapel and Warnham yet. Finally, I have a delightful picture of Michael Woolgar, which I will email to you personally. Roger No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. 3. Kay, There was a posting on rootsweb (http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/Bristol_and_Somerset/2001-06/0993462517) regarding this head stone Thomas HEAD Edwin Elliott RUTLIDGE of Sussex a free native of Sydney, who landed on 19 Mar 1853 Died 10July 1843 30yrs from the Whaling Brig "Daniel Watson' and died 31 Mar 1853 aged 24yrs. It is poorly formatted, but my guess is that it should read Thomas HEAD of Sussex Died 10July 1843 30yrs Edwin Elliott RUTLIDGE a free native of Sydney, who landed on 19 Mar 1853 from the Whaling Brig "Daniel Watson' and died 31 Mar 1853 aged 24yrs. The latter is correct (there is a picture of Edwin's stone at http://www.wyatt-family.com/sue/genealogy/Norfolk%20Island%20Graves.htm) Thomas's age should be 39 years and not 30 years (see http://gravesoftas.dynup.net/Graves%20of%20Tasmania/norfolk_island.htm). He was listed as a convict from the "Ocean." A Thomas Head is noted an absconding prisoner in the Sydney Gazette of 9 June 1825 (http://www.jenwilletts.com/newcastle_in_1825.htm). "Thomas Head per Ocean; aged 25; native of Burwash; 5' 5 1/4"'; grey eyes, flaxen hair; fresh complexion; absconded from Mr. Mudie of Newcastle" He traveled on the "Ocean II" which arrived in NSW on 27 August 1823. He was convicted on 3 Aug 1822 at Sussex Assizes. It doesn't list the crime but the sentence was "life." Also convicted at the same time were Jospeh Blackford, John Wenham, Benjamin Etherden, John Sellings the younger, James Pont, Thomas Smith; Samuel Adams and William Smith. That's all that I can find (and more than I thought that I would find!). 3. Hello members On 10th May I posted this query: Does anyone know who the George Millyard is/was who gives his name to the George Millyard Cup that the Sussex Sunday League play for? The answer: The secretary of the Sussex Sunday Football League provided me with the information I was after. George Millyard 1912-1998 was my second cousin once removed - his grandfather William Millyard and my great-grandfather John Millyard were brothers. Although I never met George, he seems to have been quite a character. Particularly he was involved with Brighton Boys Boxing Club and helped set up the Sussex Sunday Football League in the Brighton area in the 1960's Trevor Millyard 4480

    3.  John Below is the record I have. Double entries refer to the 2 registers. It looks like husband and wife. The age is missing from the last one which is common in the registers. You get date of death and date of funeral which is nice, as well as address at death. Brother is in the religious sense. All burials were at Loxwood Chapel in Spy Lane. James was not a member at the end of his life, but that is not to say he wasn’t ever one. Certainly, Plaistow Place was the centre of Cokeler life in Plaistow, where there was also a chapel, but not for very long, and now a private house I believe. There was no Belchamber in Plaistow Place in 1881 1891 or 1901. My great uncle Walter Nash was there so I have a special interest in the Plaistow community which was started by a step-relation of mine around 1880 called Richard Nightingale who hailed from Warnham.
