    1. [SFHG] Problems with Family Tree Maker 2008
    2. Peter Yates
    3. Hi Listers, I have just upgraded my FTM software to 2008 since I am now using Windows Vista on a new larger Hard Disk Drive. The product loaded properly, but did not ask me to register the product or activate the 3 months free subscription to Ancestry.co.uk. I clicked on help an accessed these two items. I got the message: Authentication with the server failed. I have checked my connection, firewall and protocols - they show FTM 2008 allowed. I use Windows Live OneCare as it integrates very well with Windows. The program did update the latest software patch automatically. I seem to have checked what I believe to be the obvious, and as administrator, I did click "Allow" this program when asked. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Annoyingly, I get the "Authentication with the server failed" dialogue box appearing constantly, when using the program. I have noticed that on my purchase invoice it says: Family Tree Maker 2008 Deluxe for Ancestry Customers. I am not currently a member! Is it a condition of use to be a member first? Should it not allow the free subscription to be registered anyway? I also noticed that my tree database was loaded to their website without asking my permission! Any help greatly appreciated. 3. Robin, A very poor collection of the De La Warr archives in extremely bad condition was deposited in ESRO in the late 1970s. I do not know if it has been conserved and catalogued but you could enquire via email to ESRO to see the current state of play with the collection. Mrs Judy Brent and myself retrieved the collection from what was in effect a barn at Buckhurst; it was extremely fragile and fragmentary but there may be some household records among the archives. The other major collection is that of the Sackville family which was at Kent Archives office and which is, I believe, catalogued on the A2A website but you would need to check. Kent Archives is also contactable via email. 3. Hi Alan, Missing father's names from marriage certificates post July 1837 is very uncommon and the usual reason is that the fathers were unknown, i.e, the person was illegitimate. The most common error was the parties giving an incorrect age. Mistakes sometimes did occur in recording and I would suggest that you check the original record whether it be at a church or local register office to see in the Register General's copy is in error. Remember that the RG copy is in fact a third hand copy if the wedding was performed at a church so mistakes could occur. If the marriage was by license then check both the allegation and bond to see if the missing information can be found. Alternately, check for the birth/baptism record of the parties. Birth certificates should be the most accurate seeing as it was usually the parent who registered the event, followed by marriages; death records are often the most unreliable as the informant was often someone other than a relative who did not have fu! ll and accurate information. Hope that this helps. 3. Hello Listers. If there is anyone making an in depth study of the De La Warr (Sackville) family, particularly in the early part of the 19th century, then I would be delighted to hear from them. I am interested as a story has come down through my family that it might be related to the Sackville family via a 'master/servant' relationship which is what my grandfather said he was told by his grandmother, the servant in question. For a start it would be nice to find out if the 'servant', my 2xgreat-grandmother, did work for the De La Warr family. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.. Many thanks. Robin

    3. By chance I was contacted from the USA as a result of my posting on Ancestry by gedcom from my 'Legacy' FHprogramme. The result is that I have been bombarded with the most useful background research of my maternal Gmother's family NOAKES and its connection to the GURR family in Lamberhurst (Sussex/Kent). I am now seeking members of the GURR family descended from Annie Elizabeth Noakes, born 1859, who married William Gurr (a widower) and butcher in Lamberhurst IN 1884. ANNIE E was sister of Kate, (sometime Catherine) Noakes born 1862, my Gmother and husband of John Lucas born 1860 and sometime coachman to Lord St Oswald of Nostell Priory.
