It seems to me a local representative is needed, on salary, living near to the GRO, who can go in and deal with these matters. Diane 10813

You have my empathy Joe ... Out of my order of 5 death certs, (which were late being generated) 2 had errors in the typed Registration box. One gentleman, according to them, had his death registered 10 years before the event occurred! The other was a transcribing error on the place of death. I telephoned - after 20 minutes waiting for a non electronic voice, I hung up & emailed them. I too, got the automatic reply saying I must expect a 9 day wait for a response. So I waited a fortnight and yesterday, rang again - I heard a different electronic voice informing me they were too busy & my call was being disconnected, but to look for help on their website! I was feeling more & more irritated, I rang again & was held in a queue for 10 minutes- this time I spoke to a person & began to get excited! The gentleman who answered was very helpful & took my number promising to ring back, which he did - within half an hour! He assured me I would receive an emailed response by the end of the day. I did! It assures me my certs are being reissued & will be sent within 2 working days ..... My anticipation is eagerly waiting for Wednesday's post! I am amazed that 2 Certified Copies had errors, & am doubting the several hundreds certs veracity that I have already ordered & received! I agree this is a multi million pound business, not a volunteer organisation & am appalled at the poor customer service we are getting! They have been bleating about how busy they are for years, why do they not invest some of the earnings in more staff to dispatch the certs, which would reduce the volume of people chasing queries & give their customers value for money. I also believe they should not take our money until the certs are dispatched - but that is another rant! The above already has me confused with two places of birth. He had six children as follows- George 1862 Cuckfield. Henry 1865 Ditchling. William 1866 Keymer. Charles 1868 Ditchling. James 1871 Ditchling. Elizabeth 1875 Ditchling. I am trying to find his marriage to Hannah (sometimes Ann) whose place of birth is variously Horsted Keynes,Danehill and Fletching. Hello list Over the past couple of weeks I have had computer problems and anti-virus programme problems, which I am sure have resulted in the loss of e-mails. I think I received an e-mail about Greenfields but, it's no longer in my inbox awaiting a reply! If anyone has e-mailed me and not received a reply in the past couple of weeks, please will they re-send. Nina Member 3626
Hello Friends, Am researching ELDRIDGEs from Ewhurst, East Sussex, who emigrated to Australia in 1839. And would like to hear from other's researching the same line, particularly any other descendants in Australia. John ELDRIDGE married Elizabeth SARGENT in Ewhurst on 15th. May 1815. Their children were: JOHN ELDRIDGE born 1816. MOSES ELDRIDGE born 1819. MIRIAM ELDRIDGE born 1821. HARRIET ELDRIDGE born 1823. BARBARA ELDRIDGE born 1824. ALFRED ELDRIDGE born 1826. FRANCES ELDRIDGE bprn 1827. JESSE ELDRIDGE born 1831. John ELDRIDGE probably died before 1833. Elizabeth later remarried and she, her second husband and all her children emigrated in 1839. Kindest Regards ...... Corinne in Melbourne, Australia.

Hi Michael, You might start by going to whitepages.com.au or more specifically to http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/resSearch.do?subscriberName=Gurr&state=NSW&page=2 which gets you some Gurrs to be looking through. For other sites try googling Australia telephone directory or similar. Martin Mitchell, Ipswich (SFHG 10977).
Amongst some notes from past members of the family I found reference to a Joan Gurr, in Victoria Australia. She is my cousin and does any one know how she or her family might be traced. She is also related to the Noakes family via her grandmother. Any help to establish contact appreciated. Joan's sister Mary, lives in Australia but her surname is not known. What a conundrum - he who tries sometimes gets results Michael E Lucas SFHG 12279
Don't forget to check the SFHG Local History Database (see the SFHG Website) from time to time. Index of places or index of occupations gives you the name of a society, then you can check for the details in the list of societies. You need the Members Only username and password. If you know of any local history or occupational society not on the list, why not notify Sheila Maynard localhistory, then the usual sfhg.co.uk. I would like to hear from the lady who had a copy of an item in the Family History Magazine on Butchers. I wondered if the item was still available for scanning Many thanks Karen
Re Divorce: Briefly - Roman Catholics can, and do, obtain divorces but as a civil matter, not a religious one. Therefore they are not free to marry again. On the other hand, an annulment means that there was no valid marriage in the first place and the couple are free to marry again. I don't know about records, but if I find out where they might be found I will pass on the information. Hi John Thanks for the information, that will be the reason I could not find it. Although I did find the National Trust "Back to Back" properties in Inge street on the net where the family lived in 1851 sometime I hope to visit. Wrightson's Directory of Birmingham for 1835 lists under PATTEN AND CLOG MAKERS one EDW.DAVIS, PUMP TAVERN YARD, BULL RING. Much of the Bull Ring area disappeared in the 1960s construction of the Bull Ring Shopping Centre. The rest plus the shopping centre also disappeared when the new Bullring Shopping Centre opened in 2004. Where Pump Tavern Yard would have been is now beneath the Birmingham branch of Selfridges. Many thanks to the many people who provided me with the answer to the non-inclusion of this census on a number of websites. Knowledge is everything! Bryan 11480 -- --Bryan Pannett

I have been following the exchange on this website with interest but I note that although the 1881 census is mentioned it appears to be largely excluded from the records. I have seen this also on some other websites and yet Ancestry does provide information. Can any listers explain the lack of information, please? It just so happens that the 1881 census is an important one in some of my researches into family. Bryan 11480 -- --Bryan Pannett
