On looking at the Culpepper family site, it would appear that, on the basis of your Benjamin's wife's name, he was not the Benjamin, son of Sir William - see http://gen.culpepper.com/ss/p9147.htm I expect you have already perused that site. If not, however, you may find some clues or something of interest there. He was the son of a William Culpepper. The Sussex Marriage Index has the marriage on 13 Jul 1626 of a William Culpeper to Jane Pellat in Bolney. This would fit so sounds like the right family! Furthermore, if you can believe the LDS members' submissions to the IGI, the father was Sir William Culpepper. If this is the right Benjamin C and he was the son of Sir William, then you should be able to find documentary evidence relating to his family, which was probably the famous historical Culpepper family of Wakehurst, etc - see the Culpepper family website at http://gen.culpepper.com/default.asp which includes databases and historical info. Dear Listers, I am trying to find the family of Barbara DUNSELL, my 3xGr Grandmother, who married Abraham REEDER (or READER) on 21/06/1795 at St Nicholas' Church, Brighton. They were my 3xgr-grandparents and lived in East Blatchington, where Abraham died in 1816 and Barbara in 1844. I have been unable to find any DUNSELL links, even searching for the most likely variations of the name, and this has become a long-standing brickwall! I would be most grateful for any leads. Hello Julie, There are some strange and inconsistent spellings in the Lancing registers. However, there are also some very useful additions. During the period of around 1844 to 1863, in addition to showing the date of birth as well as the date of baptism for each child, the vicar or clerk also made a note in the register of the mother's Maiden name. Now that can be a very useful thing and it is the only West Sussex parish where I have known that to happen, except where the child is illegitimate. The habit of recording dates of birth continued beyond 1863 and until about 1885, but recording the mother's Maiden name was discontinued around 1863.. When I examined the Lancing Burial Register, I noted that there was a very high level of infant deaths in Lancing between 1891 and 1894 and I have often wondered whether there was a particular problem in the parish e.g. bad water, poor sewerage arrangements etc to account for them all. Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex SFHG NO: 3323
Hello Margaret It looks as if the TREVETTs didn't register the births of their earlier children. I couldn't find one for the birth of their son Francis H who appears in the 1851 census aged 1 or the older two. No sign of Fanny (or Frances) between 1851-55. Nor anything that looks like a corrupted surname possibility. There was a Fanny Elizabeth Levett registered in the last quarter of 1851 but she looks to have died the next year. However, there does seem to be a marriage for a Frances Trevett on FreeBMD. In the third quarter of 1877, two possibilities for her husband but the 1881 census reveals which one as she's then married to Charles S Butler and still living at Lancing. FreeBMD has the groom as Charles Fairs Butler. They had young twin sons with them. Looking for baptisms on the IGI I couldn't see any TREVETT or TREVITT at Lancing but there are six as TRIVETT, all given as children of Francis Trivett and Sarah Jeffree. These include one for Fanny on 25 Apr 1852. Odd that Sarah's maiden name is given in distorted form as well, I see that their marriage entry has them as TREVETT and JEFFRY. The baptisms are all for different years so the consistent different spellings are rather strange. If you look at the parish register for Lancing there's a chance that Fanny's birth date might have been included - but it's not guaranteed. Note, this was originally sent to your own address but it bounced because your ISP is blocking emails from my ISP. Now sent to the list even though I know it duplicates some of the information supplied by other listers. I have collected a substantial amount of material on the TREVETT's as part of my GREVATT research. Although TREVATT or TREVETT is a West Country surname, there are a couple of instances where a known GREVATT family in the Worthing area have been incorrectly entered in parish registers and/or census returns as TREVATT's or TREVETT's. So when I collect references to GREVATT's in parish registers etc, I also collect TREVATT data for the purposes of elimination. There is a baptism at Lancing on 25 Apr 1852 of Fanny, daur of Francis TREVETT & his wife Sarah JEFFRY, with an appended Date of Birth of 22 Mar 1852. This family are sometimes recorded as TRIVETT's. However, I haven't been able to find a birth registration for Fanny TREVETT under any spelling variation of her surname. So, I can only assume that she was one of the many children whose births were never registered pre-1873 when an effective penalty system for non-registration of births and deaths was introduced. I don't have a Date of Death for Fanny, but I believe that she married Charles Fairs BUTLER in 1877. Have you seen the TREVETT memorials at St. James the Less, Lancing and also in the civil burial ground at the end of the lane? I have lots more information on the TREVETT's, so if you would like to exchange information, please contact me off-List at woolgar@one-name.org .
