    1. [SFHG] Robert TAYER
    2. GW3190
    3. I can't claim this as a brick wall since I have not had an opportunity to follow up all the clues but I would be grateful for any information about three generations of men with the name Robert TAYER. The first Robert, described as Robert Tayer of Charleton [the catalogue entry says Charleton, Steyning which seems to be incorrect however I have not seen the original] was appointed under Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex by Robert Moreley in 1631. He remained under Sheriff until at least 1637 when he made reports to parliament about the collection of ship-money. In 1635 he purchased Littleton Farm, Upwaltham. (in this document he is described as Robert Tayer of Charleton, Singleton, gent). His son Robert (2) was baptised at Singleton in 1638 however I have not found him in the Protestation returns of 1641. The baptism of Robert (2) gives his mother's name as Mary. In 1665/6 Robert (2), described as being of Midhurst, gent, and his mother, described as Mary Turner of Singleton, widow (another error or did she remarry and is a widow for the second time??) signed a marriage settlement with William Thornbury of London, gent and his son Timothy - property Littleton Farm. On 21 Feb 1665/6 Robert Tayer, bachelor of Charleton, Singleton, aged 26, married Eunice Thornbury at St Olave Hart Street, London. Robert (2) and Eunice went on to have a family of six (Robert (3), Lois, Virgin, Ann (bap 1678, St Peter the Great, Chichester), Dorothy (bap 1680, St Peter the Great, Chichester) and Eunice). Robert Tayer (2) was Mayor of Chichester in 1683-84 and in 1685 he was given the position of Customer for the port of Chichester. He died in 1718 and was buried at Singleton. His wife Eunice was his Executrix and sole beneficiary under his will. Can anyone help me to locate: 1. The marriage of Robert (1) and Mary ?. There is a marriage in the Sussex Marriage Index - Robert Tayer & Mary Meredith 23 July 1627 which some researchers seem to have claimed but that marriage is the second marriage of a Robert Tayer who was the rector at Tangmere and who died in 1629. 2. Death/burial or a will for Robert (1) 3. Possible subsequent remarriage of his widow Mary Tayer to ? Turner. 4. Baptisms for Robert, Lois, Virgin and Eunice Tayer between 1666 and 1685 (parents Robert Tayer & Eunice). 5. This is wishful thinking - the baptism of Robert (1) and names of his parents. Robert Tayer, rector of Tangmere, was born at Newbury, Berkshire c1558. If they were related then my Tayer family may have originated in that area. Thank you Gillian Melbourne, Australia

    3. Given the difficulties with your research, have you considered the possibility that there may be different ways of spelling the surname of TAYER? For example, there is a marriage on 09 Jun 1606 between Robert THAYER and Mary JONES at Lambeth, St Mary. Admittedly, it is a little early in date, even assuming that Robert (2) may be the youngest child of the marriage, but the general idea might be worth investigating, if you haven't already done so. 3. Hello Gillian. Re the origin of the name, you may find it of interest to have a look at http://www.publicprofiler.org/index.php?p=familyname (NB the link to the British Family Names site doesn't seem to be working but you can still look at the world map and home in on the UK.) In England the highest concentrations are in the south east, East Anglia, Yorkshire and Humberside. Good luck with your hunt - they sound like an interesting family! 1. [SFHG] William SHOESMITH & Grace MEPHAM
    2. PMR
    3. Greetings Listers I've had a stray William SHOESMITH (ancestor, wife unknown) on my database for some time. The baptism of the first child is 1645, and the only likely marriage I can find is this one: Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index: Place: Mayfield, East Sussex, Date: 27 May 1641: Subject: William SHOESMITH Spouse: Grace MEPHAM I have noticed a number of MEPHAM queries on the List over the years, and wonder if anyone can tell me anything about this possible marriage. The children I have for William (wife not listed in PR) are: Mary (1645), John (1647) and William (1650). If I've got it right, I'm descended from William through his second marriage to Dorothy SMITH. My query for now is this: is Grace MEPHAM an ancestor of mine, or not? Or is this not the marriage of 'my William'? Many thanks. Cheers Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia

    3. Hello Neal,  Yes I did try other ways but obviously not so persistent as Lara who's solved my puzzle brilliantly.  Margaret ________________________________ From: Neal Ward <[email protected]> To: Margaret Smith <[email protected]>; "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, 22 June 2012, 0:05 Subject: Re: [SFHG] HARVEY Harry James Have you tried looking for him just by first name, age and place of birth? 3. Wow Lara, that's great.  Indeed it does help.  Thank you so much.  I had looked quite hard for him several years ago but I've recently been revisiting my Sussex people and obviously hadn't trawled widely enough for him.  I shall now look into all the avenues you've shown.  Many thanks again for your kindness in looking into this.  Margaret ________________________________ From: Lara Holman <[email protected]> To: Margaret Smith <[email protected]> Cc: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, 22 June 2012, 8:52 Subject: Re: [SFHG] HARVEY Harry James Hi Margaret, I found a marriage for Harry on Family Search - transcribed below. You probably ignored the entry in the GRO Index because it's so way out of his original area. But, as you can see, there is a reason for that: 1895 Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of St George Hulme in the County of Manchester No 451 May 27th 1895 Harry James HARVEY, 21, bachelor, Private 6th Dragoons, Hulme Barracks, [son of] James HARVEY, millwright Mabel Laura LOCKYER, 24, spinster, 11 King Street, [dau of] James LOCKYER, seaman Married in the Church of St George according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by me, Geo. C. Ranston M.A., Curate [Both parties sign] In the presence of us, John Smith, Martha Moss There is a service record (WO97/3003/1) available for him on FindMyPast which seems to show that he bought himself out of the 6th Dragoons early in 1896. He gives his birthplace as Selmeston - which I notice is where his baptism took place. By the 1901 Census Harry and Mabel are living in Scotland at 28 Lochend Road West, Edinburgh. Harry is listed as Henry J and is now a railway porter. Mabel says that she was born in Japan (and that agrees with an entry for a Mabel Lockyer in 1891 in Manchester working as a servant and saying that she was born in Yokahama, Japan). They have a son, Frank J Harvey, aged 4, born Edinburgh. Harry is still in Edinburgh in 1911 - this time listed (at least on Scotlands People anyway) as Harry J. Hope all this helps! 3. LOL - if only Northumberland wasn't so far from Huntingdonshire!! :-) I also have brickwalls which cause me endless frustration - so it's always feels great to help someone take down one of theirs. Have you posted yours to the list? Or maybe they don't relate to Sussex?
