Several years ago I was given a copy of a "Woolven" family tree from a member (as I thought) of the 'Woolven One Name Group'. After recent correspondence with another researcher I have reason to doubt some of its content, and thought I would check back with the group only to find it does not exist now. I am trying to find the parents of Richard Woolvin born 1650-1656 in (I believe) West Grinstead. I have believed his parents to be Richard & Anne but recent contacts have suggested Richard & Leah. I do know that the PR Transcript for West Grinstead show a birth for a Richard in 1851 to Richard & Leah but I am wondering if anybody else has this family in their tree and can confirm this for me. I need to sort this question out as if my earlier information is wrong I lose 4 generations of ancestors, but I would rather lose them than claim them incorrectly. Hope somebody can help Wyn Burgess 3812
Just to check is it 1851 or 1651? Can anyone explain what 'Universal Legatee for Life' means in practice? Context = man dies in 1855, widow still alive but she was the second wife with no kids to that marriage. Man makes daughter from first marriage his Universal Legatee for Life. He was a horse-dealer and I'm thinking he may have had unfinished business that he wanted his daughter to complete for him. I only have Letters of Administration (Effects were less than £50) and the man in question and his second wife were not living together for previous two censuses. I'm guessing they might have separated. But I would like to know what that phrase actually means. My attempts at googling it suggest it does not necessarily mean daughter inherited everything. Hi Donna, The Church of England Clergy Database shows that George Goring Esquire was the patron of Streat when John Tillinghast was inducted. Does anyone know who would have appointed the parish priest/vicar in Streat c1570 - 1600? Or how can I find out? Was there a Squire who lived at Streat Place mid 1500's to 1600? I do know that Richard Tichborn/e of Cowden, Kent appointed or had great influence on the appointment c1637-1642...but I am interested in before that time. Any information or direction will be most appreciated. To: SFHG Mailing List on behalf of The Blaker Society member of the Guild of One Name Studies. The Blaker Society wishes to maintain a close relationship between themselves and SFHG as so many of the BLAKERs have been in Sussex. Now that they require a new webmaster for their website (www.blaker.org.uk) they would like someone who is already a member of SFHG. The position would be poorly paid ("it would involve an initial payment for set up and ongoing retainers on a monthly basis"). The Blakers are involved with Heraldry requiring coloured depictions of Arms. In addition they have a Paypal account and want the site set up for E Commerce. If anyone is interested perhaps they would contact me, Judy Excell, and I will forward their email to Rod Blaker and Ken Toll. Rod Blaker says: "It would certainly be a plus is someone connected with SFHG could take the position, because the One Name Study is about Blaker, and Blaker is, except in the rarest of instances, a Sussex name, since 1279 or 1296 if I recall. "We have a Committee of about 12 people, and registered users at the moment of about 30; but I hope to move on the accumulated 100 plus email addresses, and see whether we can keep these people interested and volunteering, based on a blog, and also on a wiki, both of which will need to show on the website."

Due to unexpected circumstances, Chris Hare has had to revise the topic for his talk on Wednesday 26th Sept To Chichester Meeting Centre. The revised topic is about “Schooling in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries” and is based on information collected from West Sussex school log books. I hope this will still be of interest to you and hope to see you. Hello Donna, In Giles Jacob's " A New Law Dictionary", published in 1750, the details for the word "Age" state that "Fourteen is the Age by Law to be a Witness". I have not yet found a similar book published in the 17th century but perhaps Google Books or one of the similar sites has one. I was interested to see that you have the age of the witness. I have a few names going back to that century, but I have not been able to identify their birth dates. You are fortunate indeed ! Someone may correct me, but I didn't think that opening an email itself was unsafe, whereas clicking on an unknown link within an email could be. Can anyone direct me to any on-line sources to read about 17th C law. I am still muddled about that 12-year old boy witnessing the will. I have now run across another situation in which I need to decide if the male person witnessing a will in 1649 is the son or the brother....and age will be the deciding factor. I dislike putting information in my book that is not fully correct and/or cannot be supported by a confirmed source. Thanks for any help you can be, Donna In a very cool, sunny, and colourful fall day in Michigan The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it will change; the realist adjusts the sails.
Of the recent three with no subject, one was about how to unsubscribe and two emails commented on that one so they were genuine emails. I am receiving a high number of emails from the list with no subject. I delete these without opening them to be safe. Has the list been hacked? Jean Farquhar 10168
