    1. [SFHG] Mary Weston Carley (abt 1770 - ) married 1792 in > Dallington, Sussex
    2. David Hopkins
    3. Hi Janelle Have you looked at the SFHG's online Parish Records? There are several possibilities among baptisms in nearby parishes (within radius of 15 miles) :- Mayfield 1774 dau of John & Elizabeth WESTON (6 miles) Mayfield 1775 dau of Thomas & Martha WESTON Ticehurst 1770 dau of Thomas & Ann WESTON (7.3 miles) Fletching 1768 dau of Richard & Jane WESTON (14.5 miles) Fletching 1775 dau of William & Elizabeth WESTON Fletching 1776 dau of James WESTON & Elizabeth ROOTS (Illegitimate) Hartfield 1771 dau of Sarah WESTON (illegitimate) (15 miles) There were others in the 1750s but these would have been in their mid to late thirties by 1792, which makes them less likely candidates. Take your pick! The SFHG website explains how members can get the username & password to access these records which are available free of charge to all SFHG members. 1. Re: [SFHG] bishop will court
    2. Marion Woolgar
    3. Yes, every Diocese had its own Episcopal Courts where wills were proved, and letters of administration were granted, pre-1858. The Diocese of Chichester covers the whole of the geographical county of Sussex, but is split into two Archdeaconries for administrative purposes. You will find a map showing the boundary between the two in Phillimore's Atlas* and you will see that it is the same as the pre-1974 local government boundary between West and East Sussex County Councils; however as a VERY rough guide, you can use the valley of the River Adur as a dividing line. Wills proved in the Archdeaconry of Lewes are held by the East Sussex Record Office in Lewes; and wills proved in the Archdeaconry of Chichester are held by the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester. However, both record offices have exchanged their probate records on microfilm, so a visit to either record office should suffice for most purposes. In addition, there are some parishes in Sussex that are covered by 'Peculiar Courts'. These are: Dean's Peculiar of the City of Chichester in West Sussex comprising of the parishes of St Andrew, St Bartholomew, St Martin, St Olave, St Pancras, St Peter the Great, St Peter the Less, the Close, New Fishbourne and Rumboldswhyke; Archbishop's Peculiar of the Exempt Deaneries of Pagham & Tarring in West Sussex comprising the parishes of South Bersted, Chichester All Saints, Durrington, Heene, East Lavant, Pagham, Patching, Slindon, Tangmere and West Tarring, together with Plaistow chapelry in Kirdford and a small area of Horsham called the Bishopric; Archbishop's Peculiar of the Exempt Deanery of South Malling in East Sussex comprising Buxted, The Cliffe or St Thomas Lewes, Edburton, Framfield, Glynde, Isfield, Lindfield, Mayfield, Ringmer, South Malling, Stanmer, Uckfield, Wadhurst; Royal Peculiar of Battle in East Sussex comprising just the parish of Battle. None of the above are currently available online, although these records have been filmed by the LDS and there are some online indexes - see the link to the LDS Wiki. See also the SFHG web site. However, do bear in mind that some Sussex wills were proved, and administrations were granted in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC). This Court was used by the wealthy, those who owned assets in more than one Diocese and the occasionally by the military serving overseas, although some of the latter used the court of the Bishop of London. PCC wills are available online on the TNA web site, the administrations are not. 1. [SFHG] Query re hypothesis
    2. sandra moffatt
    3. Hello all, Since I can't seem to find a baptismal record for an ancestor, and I've searched all surrounding parishes, I am trying to see if this would be an acceptable hypothesis for a parent. Thoms HOBDEN married Martha Starley in 1820 in Bolney, Sussex. On the parish record, one of the witnesses is a James HOBDEN. This could be his father, a brother or a relative. I found a will from a James HOBDEN who died in 1841 who lists his children (6 of them), and 1 of them is a Thomas HOBDEN. The death date of this James is consistent with a parent dying who could fit my Thomas. Also, it says that this James owned a farm called Hasledean, in Cuckfield, which is only 3 km. from Bolney. In all records, Thomas says he was born in Keymer. I tried to find more information about this farm and couldn't. Would it be an acceptable assumption that this COULD have been his father? 3. Will do. I rec'd a note from a Tilliinghast family member indicating there was some historical information on the Tillinghast family being held by the person "in charge" of the now-closed Streat Parish Church.  So, I am in hopes Sr. Moody Stuart will be of some help in finding this information among the few bits of records that remained in the church just before its closing. Stay tuned. 3. Heather, You might be able to find out more from Dartmoor Prison Museum ( http://www.dartmoor-prison.co.uk/). His trial and conviction would probably have been in the local (or even national) press, so newspaper archives might elicit something. I believe FindMyPast have some newspaper archives, too. An imaginative internet search of his full name together with the possible dates may bring up a court record. An outside chance is that if he was in the forces between 1914-18, his service record (if it exists) might lead to more information. Good luck, Tony www.tonyholkham.org On 16 November 2012 07:38, Heather Brooks <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi, I would like to find out why Walter (George) Andrews was sent to > prison, hope someone can help. > > 1901 census Fittleworth. 2. Peter Smith
    3. Dear All Back in February I was asking for views and experiences on sending for Army Service Records. I decided to go ahead and send for the record of my Father and Grandfather and was pleased I did. I received a phone call from the Historical Disclosures office about my Grandfathers record and after a discussion decided not to proceed (the only record they had that could "possibly" be for my grandfather, was most likely not). Yesterday my fathers record arrived. It will take a bit of time to work out what all the abbreviations are (they do enclose a list to help). I don't know if it was the norm but my father did move about a lot. Although it did cost £30 if I hadn't sent for it I would always have wondered what I may have missed. My particular record contained 11 pages but I don't know if this is the average. I found all the staff I spoke to extremely helpful. The advised turn round time for the record was nine to twelve months. I sent off my request in April and received it yesterday (about 7 months). I hope anyone else who sends for a record is as lucky as me. Regards Jane Shergold
