    3. Pat...Got your e-mail post. My Wife and I may be coming to Knoxville and Gatlinburg around the 15th of October. Maybe we could say Hi' Be good Michael Severs 5408 Hussey Road Jamestown, Ohio (Home e-mail: ww4864@dragonbbs.com) -----Original Message----- From: Patricia M. Seaver [mailto:pseaver@comcast.net] Sent: Wednesday, August 21, 2002 11:23 AM To: SEVERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: TN marriages I can identify most of the Hawkins and Hamblen Co. Seaver marriages. I tend to think that the Sevier group is a totally different family, pronounced SeVEER rathe than SEEver. However, occasionally I have found a Se(a)ver(s) family member mis-transcribed as Sevier. Most of the Hamblen and Hawkins Co. TN Seavers (Sever/s, Seever/s, etc.) are descendants of Joseph and Jeremiah Seaver, sons of William Severs, who died in southwest VA about 1814 (Joseph's guardianship record was recorded Nov. 1814 in Washington Co.). Jeremiah is found in Hawkins Co. censuses from 1830-1860 (he died 1869). Joseph was on Hawkins 1836 tax list, 1840 Grainger Co. census, 1850 Jefferson Co, TN census (Hamblen was formed 1870 from Greene, Grainger and Jefferson), and 1860 Hawkins Co.; he died before 1870. A sister of Joseph and Jeremiah, Susannah, married Jacob Grubb of Washington Co, VA; she was living in Grainger Co. in 1830, Jefferson Co. in 1840, Anderson Co. in 1850 and then back in Grainger Co. in 1860, 1870, and 1880. Joseph and Jeremiah's brothers, John and William C., were living in Wythe Co. VA. Another brother, Henry, died about 1822 in VA, unmarried and without children. Here are the identifications: > >Seaver, Jeremiah Spouse : Kountz, Elvira > Marriage date : Sep 4, 1851 > County : Hawkins > Gender : Male > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0972789 - 0972791 Jeremiah, s/o William & Unknown. He was first married to Nancy Thurman. >Seaver, Henry C. Spouse : Williams, Helen > Marriage date : Apr 3, 1858 > County : Hawkins > Gender : Male > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0972789 - 0972791 Henry C. Seaver was the son of Jeremiah Seaver and his first wife, Nancy Thurman. >Seaver, Thomas B. Spouse : Robertson, Leudna A. > Marriage date : Sep 26, 1859 > County : Hawkins > Gender : Male > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0972789 - 0972791 Thomas B. Seaver, s/o Joseph and Matilda (Unknown) Seaver >Seaver, John Spouse : Seaver, Mary E. > Marriage date : Jan 11, 1861 > County : Hawkins > Gender : Male > > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0972789 - 0972791 John Seaver was the son of Jeremiah and Nancy (Thurman) Seaver. Mary E(meline). was d/o Joseph & Matilda (Unknown) Seaver. John died in sep 1861, and Mary Emeline married George W. Lawson (below). >Seaver, Emeline Spouse : Lawson, George W. > Marriage date : Sep 15, 1864 > County : Hawkins > Gender : Female > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0972789 - 0972791 (Mary) Emeline is the daughter of Joseph Seaver; George W. Lawson was her second husband. >Seaver, N. Ellen Spouse : Talley, John E. > Marriage date : Oct 18, 1885 > County : Hamblen > Gender : Female > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0969613 - 0969615 Possibly Nancy E., d/o Thomas B. & Leuda Seaver. >Seaver, Nelson C. Spouse : Hassell, Artena > Marriage date : Dec 2, 1872 > County : Hickman > Gender : Male > > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0975508 - 0975511 Joseph and Matilda Seaver had a son named Nelson. He married Caroline Biggs 1870 in Hawkins Co., TN. This may be an entirely different man, but the name is rather unusual. > >Seaver, Alice Spouse : Watts, Franklin > Marriage date : Jul 15, 1880 > County : Hamblen > Gender : Female > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0969613 - 0969615 There was an Alice Seaver, age 17, listed as granddaughter of Matilda Seaver (Joseph's widow) in Hamblen Co. 1880 census. There was an Alice M., age 8, living with George and (Mary) Emeline (Seaver) Lawson in 1870. SPECULATION: Since George and Emeline married Sept. 1864, it may be that Alice was a daughter of Mary Emeline by her first marriage to her cousin, John B. Seaver, s/o Jeremiah. Although the 1870 census does not indicate a different last name for Alice, it could be that she took her stepfather's name, but used her legal name for her marriage, or it could be a census error. Although this is speculation, there was no Alice living in any of the Seaver households in 1870. I have not found Mary Emeline & George in 1880. >Sever, Frank Spouse : Phipps, Emer > Marriage date : Jan 19, 1866 > County : Hawkins > Gender : Male > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0972789 - 0972791 Possibly from a different family of Sever(s), who lived mainly in Scott Co, VA, which borders Hawkins Co, TN. >Sever, James T. Spouse : Creech, Florence > Marriage date : Jul 19, 1881 > County : Hamblen > Gender : Male > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0969613 - 0969615 I don't find him anywhere in my files of Joseph's and Jeremiah's descendants. By the 1880s, Joseph and Jeremiah's families, and those of their southwest VA relatives, were quite consistently using the Seaver or Seavers spelling. 3. Hi Michael, Please do get in touch when you're in the area. Our phone is 865/670-9986. We're going to be out of town in Oct. from the 5th until about the 10th. Our plans are somewhat uncertain, because we are putting this house on the market this week. We're aren't moving far this time--about 30 miles southwest to Tellico Village, a golf-lake-vacation-retirement community. Keep in touch.
