Nancy Camp in Wythe Co. VA 1829. He appears in Wythe Co. records as being illegitimate. By 1840 they were living in Williamson Co., TN with 2 males 0-5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15 and 1 male 30-40. In 1850 they were living in Davidson Co. with Wm. 18, Clinton 16, Corns (Cornelius) 14, Jas 11, Susan 8, Alger 6 and Joel A.B. 4. Comparing the 1840 data to the 1850, there was a 10-15 year old male in the home in 1840 who is not present in 1850; he could have been John M. and would have been 20-25 in 1853, definitely old enough to marry--SPECULATION >Seavers, John M. I can identify most of the Hawkins and Hamblen Co. Seaver marriages. I tend to think that the Sevier group is a totally different family, pronounced SeVEER rathe than SEEver. However, occasionally I have found a Se(a)ver(s) family member mis-transcribed as Sevier. Most of the Hamblen and Hawkins Co. TN Seavers (Sever/s, Seever/s, etc.) are descendants of Joseph and Jeremiah Seaver, sons of William Severs, who died in southwest VA about 1814 (Joseph's guardianship record was recorded Nov. 1814 in Washington Co.). Jeremiah is found in Hawkins Co. censuses from 1830-1860 (he died 1869). Joseph was on Hawkins 1836 tax list, 1840 Grainger Co. census, 1850 Jefferson Co, TN census (Hamblen was formed 1870 from Greene, Grainger and Jefferson), and 1860 Hawkins Co.; he died before 1870. A sister of Joseph and Jeremiah, Susannah, married Jacob Grubb of Washington Co, VA; she was living in Grainger Co. in 1830, Jefferson Co. in 1840, Anderson Co. in 1850 and then back in Grainger Co. in 1860, 1870, and 1880. Joseph and Jeremiah's brothers, John and William C., were living in Wythe Co. VA. Another brother, Henry, died about 1822 in VA, unmarried and without children. Here are the identifications: > >Seaver, Jeremiah Spouse : Kountz, Elvira > Marriage date : Sep 4, 1851 > County : Hawkins > Gender : Male > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0972789 - 0972791 Jeremiah, s/o William & Unknown. He married Caroline Biggs 1870 in Hawkins Co., TN. This may be an entirely different man, but the name is rather unusual. > >Seaver, Alice Spouse : Watts, Franklin > Marriage date : Jul 15, 1880 > County : Hamblen > Gender : Female > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0969613 - 0969615 There was an Alice Seaver, age 17, listed as granddaughter of Matilda Seaver (Joseph's widow) in Hamblen Co. 1880 census. There was an Alice M., age 8, living with George and (Mary) Emeline (Seaver) Lawson in 1870. SPECULATION: Since George and Emeline married Sept. 1864, it may be that Alice was a daughter of Mary Emeline by her first marriage to her cousin, John B. Seaver, s/o Jeremiah. Although the 1870 census does not indicate a different last name for Alice, it could be that she took her stepfather's name, but used her legal name for her marriage, or it could be a census error. Although this is speculation, there was no Alice living in any of the Seaver households in 1870. I have not found Mary Emeline & George in 1880. >Sever, Frank Spouse : Phipps, Emer > Marriage date : Jan 19, 1866 > County : Hawkins > Gender : Male > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0972789 - 0972791 Possibly from a different family of Sever(s), who lived mainly in Scott Co, VA, which borders Hawkins Co, TN. >Sever, James T. Spouse : Creech, Florence > Marriage date : Jul 19, 1881 > County : Hamblen > Gender : Male > Source : County Court Records > Microfilm Number : 0969613 - 0969615 I don't find him anywhere in my files of Joseph's and Jeremiah's descendants. By the 1880s, Joseph and Jeremiah's families, and those of their southwest VA relatives, were quite consistently using the Seaver or Seavers spelling. James and >George are suspect children but unproven totally. There was a George Severs on Sullivan Co, TN tax lists in 1796, 1797 and 1809. Since Sullivan Co. is adjacent to the areas where Jacob Seaver (the one who moved from Washington/Scott VA to Switzerland, IN) bought and sold land in the early 1800s, I have speculated that the Sullivan Co. George could have been another brother of Jacob. I have also speculated that William Severs 1752-1852 of VA, Anderson/Knox TN and Nodaway, MO might be related in some way to Jacob-- perhaps an uncle. I base that speculation on the Lamar connection and on the geographical proximity. The age of the George you found in the 1830 Anderson census indicates a DoB between 1790 and 1800. There's no way to know the age of the George who appeared in Sullivan Co. records between 1796 and 1809, but surely he had to have been born by 1775 to be on tax lists in 1796. Therefore, the George of Sullivan Co. and the George of Anderson Co. had to be two different men, but perhaps they were related. Pat Seaver -- Patricia Moorefield Seaver Knoxville, Tennessee (formerly of Williamsville, New York)
I am working on William Severs born l752 who lived in Anderson County in the early l800 to l849 when he went to Nodaway Co MO and died there in l852 (Yes age l00). I found the l8l0 and 20 Census unhelpful but l830 was enlightening. Wm was listed 112000001 2210011 This would translate l male under5 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15 and one male 60-70 There are no known children after l8ll, so if these figures are accurate there are several grandchildren living with them or something is strange. the females would be the same 2 under 5, 2 5-l0, and 1 was l0-l5 and Catherine was the last 1 which would be 40-50 (she was probably closer to 80 so ???) That leaves 1 female age 30-40 who is probably the mother of some of the smaller children and a widow or divorced female. Living adjacent were known Children of Wm Severs and Catherine Peck who were John Severs and Rebecca Vandergriff 20001 and100001 (guess Rebecca was a little older than John or he was kidding her when he gave that data). Wm Severs Jr. with wife Tolinda 21001 11001 Probably he was about 33 and not 20-30. Also living nearby were George Severs 110001 10001 James Severs 0001 1001 this would make James 20 or under with one child (female) and also 20 or under (maybe l5). George would be 30-40 with wife 20-30 and 3 smaller children. James and George are suspect children but unproven totally. Missing were known children (1) Mary Polly Severs born l795 or 6 but she married Wm Lamar in l8ll (2) Daniel H Severs born l800 and (3) Charles J Severs born 1811 and (4) Jacob Peck Severs born l809. Daniel H Severs was in Madison Co MO Census, Jacob Peck Severs was in Jefferson Co Ky by l830, and Charles J Severs seemed to be in transit to Washington Co AR where he was known before l835. Does anyone Know anything of James or George Severs and their children and whether they were children of Wm Severs and Catherine Peck or someone else. Other connected familes seem to be Vandergriff, Leinart Best Charles Severs

Below are some Se(a)ver(s) records from early southwest VA and northeast TN. I have more complete entries as well as sources; contact me off-list to request the complete file. Scott Co, VA was formed 1814 from Washington Co, VA (not to be confused with Washington Co, TN which was formed from Washington Co, NC). Hawkins Co., TN borders on Scott Co, VA; Sullivan Co, TN borders on both Scott & Washington Co, VA. BTW, one of the last entries, dated 1830, refers to Jacob Seavers, deceased. Esther Croberger Seaver's DoD of 1854 has sometimes been attributed to Jacob, but it seems clear that he died in the 1820s. It is also most often stated that Jacob and the family moved to Switzerland Co, IN in 1818 or 1819. He may have bought land there in 1818 and/or 1819, but a Jacob Seaver and a family which matches his are included in the 1820 Scott, VA census. Also note the lawsuits dated 1820 and 1821 with reference to Jacob. Pat ************************************* Geo Severes 0122 Sullivan 200 28 mar 1781 beg. at M. I am studying the descendants of William Severs born l752 Germany or VA depending on the source. No hint of his parentage. He married Catherine Peck in Montgomery Co VA in l793. There seemed to be no previous marriage but that is not definite. I believe he might be a deserting Hessian Soldier as there is such a family rumor (Legend). I have found one named Johannes Wilhelm Siebert born l751/2. I cannot find his military occupation and I can find his birth date (D/M/Y) but cannot find the same of Wm Severs to compare. Several of the children of Wm and Catherine and some of the grandchildren worked as a blacksmith during parts or all their lives and I believe it is likely they learned that trade at his home. I have been unable to find the military trade of Johannes Siebert. If anyone has any method to find military occupations/jobs of the Hessians I would be most interested. He was in the vonWissenbach troops. Charles Severs
For some time a number of descendants of William Se(a)ver(s) of southwest VA and northeast TN in the early 1800s have been trying to prove that William was closely related to Jacob Seaver of Washington/Scott Co, VA and Switzerland Co, IN (and therefore also to Jacob's sister Elizabeth Seaver Lamar and brother John). We had a good deal of circumstantial evidence but no proof. (I will be happy to share that circumstantial evidence with anyone who contacts me directly. ***Please note that this is NOT the William Seavers @1752-1852 who married Catherine Peck in VA and moved to Knox/Anderson, TN and much later to Nodaway, MO. It may well be that the two Williams were related--perhaps cousins or uncle/nephew. Yesterday I came across the following entry in an article in The Historical Society of Washington County, VA Publication Series II No. 21 May 1984 p. 13: "Nov. 16 1814 Michael Decherd named guardian of Joseph Seavers, orphan of William Seavers, deceased. Bond: 4400 Surety: Jacob Seavers" To my knowledge, this is the first direct link that has been found between William and Jacob. We had previously estimated William Seavers' DoD as 1817 based on guardianship records beginning in 1818 found in Wythe Co, VA for some of William's other children. It is now apparent that William died before November 1814. A family Bible and census records indicate that William's older children were born in the mid 1790s. Both William and Jacob are found in land and tax records of Washington Co, VA, Scott Co, VA (formed from Washington in 1814) in the 1790s and early 1800s. In addition to William and Jacob, there are records in this area at the same time for a George and a Samuel Se(a)ver(s). -- Patricia Moorefield Seaver Knoxville, Tennessee (formerly of Williamsville, New York)
