Dear Charles, All the Severs are entitled to the reduced Group rate by using the following link to order a test: _http://www.ftdna.com/surname_join.asp?code=W68870&special=true_ (http://www.ftdna.com/surname_join.asp?code=W68870&special=true) Again, I am in favor of DNA tests to assist with genealogy but only for selected individuals. One male in each family group that is known to be a documented group. Multiple tests in a group are not very helpful for the amount of cost. The money would be better spent on testing a member of another group. ALways a male member and always a 25 or 37 marker test as 12 is not sufficient to tell anything definite as the first 12 markers are oriented toward larger groups of immigrants and tend to match with persons of the same migratory pattern. For example, my test matched better with l8 persons NOT NAMED Severs and NOT CONNECTED to Severs than they did a very likely cousin. The probable cousin matched ll of 12 markers on the first 12. This is fairly common with one mutation, but the others were 12/12 match. More markers are needed for additional sureity. As you can see 12 markers wont do it. The DNA can be used where proof is very difficult. It will not tell an exact relationship but most problems of relationship can be suspected by the data at hand but cannot be proven. This does not prove a relationship exactly but does tell that a close one exists. EXAMPLE: My family group started with a marriage of Wm Severs born l752 and Catherine Peck born around l770. They married in l793 in Montgomery Co VA and, promptly , moved to Knox Co TN where that area was cut off and formed Anderson Co TN (no real move, just a boundary change). There is a Daniel H Severs born l800-02 in TN found in the l850 census of Madison Co AL. Daniel and Daniel H Severs is a name used in 4 others in the proven family group and he is highly suspect as a son of theirs. The same is true of Charles J Severs found in Washington Co AR and born l8ll (my ancestor ws born l809). In that case the names are not similar as there was only one son, Frederick Ballard Severs (apparently named for the wifes family, Ballard at least) and 3 daughters. Daniel's family cannot be traced as yet to a living male. ( I will paste an outline below, later), but the son was traced to a Charles Severs in California. IN that case a DNA may be the only way to tell if there is a definite connection although it will not dell exactly what that connection was. Of couse, the more matches the more likely they are to be sons of William l752. Of course, we are hoping to get a DNA test on that person but he has not stated his willingness to do so. I am still looking for a male desc of this group of Daniel l802 July probably. I would gladly give any other info that I have Charles Severs
Some time back I corresponded with a Severs researcher who had a connections with Beets surname. If that person subscribes will they please contact Ray Severs (_rsevers1@msn.com_ (mailto:rsevers1@msn.com) ) as he, too, has a Beets connection to explore with you. Charles Severs There is now a DNA program for Severs and Sevier. I have found no connection with the two families and it does not matter as there are two Severs to compare with. The more persons tested the more a new person submitting a test can learn from matches and mismatches. I have matched with Don Severs whose ancestor , WIlliam Severs born l797 TN, proves to be son of WIlliam Severs l752 who married Catherine Peck in l793 in Montgomery Co VA and lived in Knox/Anderson Co TN until he moved to Nodaway Co MO in l849 (YES- age 97 and moved that far, probably horse and wagon). Other sons proven are John Severs l898, Jacob Peck Severs l809. Proven daughter Mary "Polly" Severs ,born TN 1795 who married William Lamar in l8ll (YES age 16) as his wife #2. Suspect children Charles J Severs l8ll, Daniel Severs 1802. I have located a male for possible DNA test from Charles J Severs l8ll but would love to have a test from a direct male Descendant of Daniel or any other Severs group that is not researched back to an emigrant . A single DNA test for any known group of Severs of 25 or 37 markers should show a connection or NOT and this could direct research in a more favorable direction. A test of more than a single male from each group would not tell much more than a single test of ONE PERSON. I would encourage any group to get tested but only one person per group. Further info go to _www.familytreedna.com_ (http://www.familytreedna.com) . I hope you will join in on this easy project that can tell a lot very quickly. I will keep you posted when I get the result of any future tests done.

I have calculated that my group of Severs probably represents 20% of all the present day Severs in the USA Phone directory today (750 of them not counting other spellings which would be around 2500 I suspect.). I, recently have had a 25 marker DNA test as descendant of Jacob Peck Severs l809 who was son of WIlliam Severs l752 who married in VA. There were two other proven siblings. They were Mary "Polly " Severs 1796 who married WIlliam Lamar in l8ll and John Severs born l798 William Severs l797 and Charles J Severs l8ll and , Daniel Severs l800-1802. Carol Clouse Severs had her brother tested and he was desc of William l797 and a match was observed. I have, recently, found a Charles Severs living in California who is a direct Desc of Charles J Severs l8ll above and hope he will get tested. Anyone know of a living descendant of Daniel Severs l800-l802 who was found in Madison CO AL in the l850 census. He is my next project and I would, dearly, like to have some help from a relative or person interested in that group. I will paste an outline of what I know on Daniel H Severs l802 at the bottom of this message for inspection if anyone is interested.. This was part of a Sevier group from TN and none of them matched. It occurred to me that ANY male named Severs could join that group, submit his specimen (cheek scraping) and pay a single fee ($227 I recall) and tell if they matched this group of Severs or this group of Sevier. If they did match (I give it 20-25% chance) a huge amount of genealogy can be included (as I have it and glad to share) . If they did not match they might match with Sevier ( I give it a much smaller chance, maybe 3%) . If that failed there may be a Seaver group (If so I would give it l0% but only if there was a Seaver or Seavers group). In short a lot for ONLY ONE TEST and not a group. As tests and matches grow the probability would be greater for a match. A 12 marker test can be ordered for about $175. but, I feel 25 markers or 37 markers are better assurance. If you have any questions check _www.familytreedna.com_ (http://www.familytreedna.com) and see if you can get answers. #1 question: There are 4 companys doing DNA for genealogical purposes. Do those companies compare records for matches among themselves. #2 Can an individual compare for himself by matching the results of their test with others who have been tested by another lab. #3 if YES to #2 how does one do that judging from the activity on this list there may be only 30 Severs researchers in the entire country I would like to see a family group of about this size have a large number tested and see how many fall into a very small number of groups. I suspect no more than l0 groups would account for 60-80% of families who could trace their ancestry back to 1800 or before. I found an old querry in an Oklahoma Genealogy magazine made by a lady named PUGSLEY. This was about 35 years old but her data may be out there. She was asking about Mary "Polly" Severs born about l795 in TN and married William Lamar in l8ll as his wife #2 (note her young age). He was born about l770. any information on the subject or her or her DATA whereabouts would be greatly appreciated. Charles Severs Louisville Ky

I would guess grandson but could be unrelated. I have written that address and will see if anyone of the same family actually lives at that address still. If you have any way to find a widow or find a wife's name or initials I would like to have it. This person is likely to be gggrandson of Barto Severs or Samuel B Severs of OK. Any assistance appreciated. Samuel was son of Frederick B Severs and grandson of Charles J Severs born l8ll TN and lived in Washington Co AR and is buried there. There has been a Charles J Severs in existence since l8ll. If anyone knows any family of Charles J Severs above, or any other Charles J Severs, that would be nice as well. Best for the new year. I am still tracking the younger Charles J Severs and the younger Barto Severs. I think it might be possible that the younger Barto has a male descendant in OK somewhere or in that area. I have access to the l920 Census and plan to start there with Barto. I have a little suspicion that the younger Charles J Severs may have died young but do not know. Anyone know or have any info about him. He may be in the SS death index but I could not identify him , definitely. Did anyone have any thoughts on him being one of the SS Death index Charles Severs listings as they did not use middle initial, which really helps. I assume he was a Charles Jackson Severs but am not even sure about that. I have more info about all these but am looking for descendants more than anything else. Many thanks Charles Severs
