    2. Hi, Got a quick question. I have a brand new Gateway computer (1 month old) it is working perfect except I turned it on yesterday and there's no controlling the mouse. It flies all over and is hard to manuever. Thought maybe a virus but I have not downloaded any programs just running with what came with unit. It's a cordless mouse, I tried changing the batteries but it's still flying. In case it's relevant I am running McAfee virus protection. Ellen

If you are not running programs to remove these from your computer on a daily basis you may have picked up something. These are not caught by anti-virus programs. For information on these free programs, either search the archives of this list or Google for programs such as Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spy Subtract and a host of others. They are now a part of the necessary protection we all need in addition to anti-virus programs if we ever visit websites or open email. I let my grandson visit a children's site right after scanning with those programs. When we exited the site I had 6 new "items" on my computer from that one site. Regards, Sharyn

    3. I would call Gateway. It's possible that something is amiss in your settings. There are two places where you can control mouse motion. Start > Control Panel > Mouse or Start > Control Panel > Accessibility and click on the Mouse tab. Gateway can help you with the proper settings if it turns out the problem is in one of the settings. 3. Did the problem start after installing SP2 by any chance? I had that problem, and just had to fool with Control Panel---Mouse Properties for awhile. Some sort of conflict, and it was actually the Microsoft default driver I was using at that time. I have a new mouse without that problem, so I can't remember the exact wording of the choice to deselect. What it did though if I understand correctly, is make the mouse zero in on small targets. If you get close to a clickable item, the driver would make sure your click got results. Try and deselect that choice, or any other optional choices in your Mouse Properties one by one. You can always turn the functions back on again if it doesn't help. Do you have another mouse to test with? Try using an older mouse and see if you still have problems. If it is a conflict, and not some of the Spyware, etc. business that Sharyn was talking about, you may end up using another mouse eventually anyway! 3. Hello Ellen, Wednesday, May 4, 2005, 8:01:17 PM, you wrote: Eac> Hi, Eac> Got a quick question. My own tends to get upset if the USB lead to the camera comes between the mouse and receiver - it gets very jittery and difficult to control. Try moving the receiver unit and/or cables to see if it helps. If nothing does then you may have a faulty unit and Gateway should replace it promptly. However they may ask you do re-install the driver software first just to check that it's not the problem. Gateway support should be able to talk you through it. If you have a plain old PS/2 mouse in the meantime you can use that till your fancy cordless one is replaced :-) HTH and Good Luck. -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe
