Need help I have XP. While in Microsoft Word I clicked on my Doc. labeled 'Stories' and then clicked on the story I was working on. I worked on it at least 15 minutes--and then it disappeared! It had to be there so I went to Start and searched. It didn't show up. I opened 'My latest Documents' and it was right on top. I clicked on it and it opened but nothing was there. A sign came on: Microsoft Word needs a converter to display this file correctly. It is not currently installed. Then it asks if I want to install it. Was is it? Do I want to install it? and first and foremost what happened to my story? How can it just disappear? What did I do? JKH

That's why it's a very good reason to keep backup copies of all important files - you never know what may happen !! Now for a possible way of getting your lost story back .... Word can be set to make automatic backup files and if so you should be able to go into Windows Explorer and find a .bak file with the same name as your story file. If you do, then open up Word and click on the 'Open Files' link and in the box where it says what type of file to open, click the black arrow to drop down a list and choose 'All Files' You should now be able to open the .bak file. Note that you may also see a .tmp file of the same name as your story and if the .bak file hasn't been created then this .tmp file may have most of your story in it. You may need to set your PC to view hidden files to see this .tmp file. HTH and Good Luck. PS - When you get it back, make a backup of it somewhere else on your Hard Drive before working on it again and when you've finished editing copy the new file to your backup. Golden Rule of computing - always work on a copy of a file, not the original !! -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe
