John, one of the best sources for OE help and tips is InsideOE. Here you will find a method to archive your messages for saving on a CD: http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/faqs/how.htm#archive Another good way of reducing the load in OE is to use GMail as your mail account/s. GMail allows a storage of 2+GB far more than any one of us would really exceed. The messages are easily searched (similar fashion to a Google search). You can read about GMail here: http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/about.html I use specific GMail accounts for different purposes and even have one for archiving mail received from other addresses. If you would like a GMail account let me know and I will send an invitation. Lance P. S. Check out Legacy Family Tree today! It mentions that it will automatically set up OE mail if you want it. When I switched from MSN to Earthlink last time I lost all of my saved mail because it wiped out OE and set up an entirely new one, completely empty. I never did recover the files. How can I avoid losing the thousands of saved messages in my local folders? Sharyn
Sharyn, your OE files are all contained in a ".DBX" file. Again, the InsideOE site offers help in this area. Read about a handy backup utility here: http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/backup/ And this page offers advice on importing your folders: http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/faqs/how.htm#importOE5 Probably, what did occur when you last changed is that you allowed that service to install a new version of Internet Explorer as part of their setup. Outlook Express is a component of IE. This could have removed your ability to "see" your old ".dbx" folders, even though they may have been (or still are) there. Do a search for "*.dbx" files and see what you find. May work. Lance P. S. Check out Legacy Family Tree today! Thanks Lance & all , I prefer to stay with OE and have found a way to do what I wanted to do, Which is to copy all stored emails to a word file and then copy them to a CD for future use ---John John from West Aus ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lance" <lance.b.4u@gmail.com> To: <SENIOR-NEWBIE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 23, 2005 7:52 AM Subject: RE: [SR-NEWBIE] Saving Messages in OE to a CD John, one of the best sources for OE help and tips is InsideOE.
