    3. My CD drive won't work at all. A person I contacted to query getting it fixed has told me that a replacement CD drive for my computer [which is a laptop] isn't made anymore. Does this mean that I now have to trash this computer and buy a new one? I'm hard pressed to pay for needed repairs let alone a new computer. Can it be true? Is there something I can do here at home to get it going again? Help appreciated, Jenny.

    3. You could, perhaps, buy and external CD drive. They are not as convenient, but it's cheaper than a new computer. -- Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.308 / Virus Database: 266.10.2 - Release Date: 4/21/2005

    3. Check out an external CDRW, be sure to look at one that records and plays. I use one with my laptop, my laptop has a standard CD drive, a floppy attachment (plugs in) and a MemStick (insert) option. I use a USB connected external CDRW and it works fine with the laptop. Truly a CD drive isn't essential to using a computer unless you want to install a program from CD or listen to music (I personally never saw much sense in using a computer as a stereo system). 3. More thanks to you Larry and Joan. My CD player was also acting oddly, too. After trying everything I could think of to bring it back to life I decided to just live without it until I could afford a new computer. Your advice worked like magic. Thanks again. 3. Richard, just replace your CD drive not your computer if it is working ok. Four screws and a couple of cable plugs are all that you will be dealing with. 3. Yes, that is a "blow", Jenny. As your lap top is still working you may want to look at an external drive. Depending on where you live in Australia, have a look at Harris Technology, ComputersOnLine or one of the other computer suppliers near you. HT have an Iomega external drive for AUD141: http://www.ht.com.au/scripts/xworks.exe?CAT:CD2 While ComputersOnLine have it for AUD127.89 http://www.computersonline.com.au/products/product_details.php?prod_id=7608 That is certainly better than paying for a new computer. Just make sure any you contemplate purchasing are able to be connected to your laptop (if it is an "older" model). Lance P. S. Check out Legacy Family Tree today!
