Nancy, another area that may need cleaning is your mouse pad. While this is a particularly important task when using an infra-red type mouse, it can also affect the performance of a ball-type mouse. Any crumb or other impediment could cause an incorrect signal being generated by the mouse. See if that is what your problem is.
