What happens when you try to make a shortcut to explorer.exe ?? You can always use the 'My Documents' link and then click on the icon to move up a level. WinXP was built so that desktop icons could be kept to a minimum - in fact it will ask you if you want to hide ones that are there that you've not used for a while ! Not everyone wants to work that way of course but Uncle Bill knows better you know <lol> -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe

    3. It is just a case of why do you need any "shortcut"? They are simply a one-click way of accessing something rather quickly. Of course, the less shortcut icons you have on your Desktop makes for one tidy Desktop. Only have the shortcuts you "really" need - any others are just taking up Desktop space and consuming your computer's resources. If you don't need to use an Explorer shortcut, then you don't need one ;-). By the way, it helps if you include at least part of the individual message you are replying to in any thread. That way, your message is more clearer. I can't believe I am so ignorant at my age! Windows Explorer is there to be able to locate files anywhere on the Hard Drive or to be able to add folders / files. WinXP wants everyone to just use the 'My Documents' folder for all their stuff and leave the rest of the file structure for Windows to use. If you can live with just having 'My Documents' then there's no need for a link to the rest of the Hard Drive. I think the reasoning behind this was to prevent twiddling where a user wasn't supposed to be messing. All part of the 'dumbing down' of Windows, but the advanced user can still get where they want :-) -- Best regards, Barry mailto:barry@yobunny.co.uk MicroSoft Free Zone running Xandros 2.0 Deluxe
