    3. I run Windows 98 with an Epson sylus color 600 printer. which is about 9 years old. It has recently refused to print and all the lights on the printer blink continually when the machine is running.. My guilde book tells me that an internal error may have occurred. Attempts to reinstall the Epson color program with the disk that came with the machine has not been successful telling me that certain files are missing. I have a three- fold question 1.- where do I go to get the missing files for a machine that old 2.- What would cause an internal error and 3.- Why can't I get the machine to reset using the original disk for reinstallation.. Assuming that this machine may have bitten the dust. what would be the commendations for purchasing a new machine.--- the kind, model and some things to watch for.. One thing I really want to be able to do and that is to refill the cartridges. I know some will think of me as a "tight wad" but I find that I would rather feed my face than to buy ink cartridges. Most of my printing involves photos and text copies of client's papers. Any help or recommendations will be very much appreciated. - Grandma Fern cartridges

Wow - that's an old printer and I assume it's seen a lot of work over the years .... and this is where Epson's can suddenly stop working even though there's actually nothing wrong with the drivers or PC. What happens is the waste ink tank ( in reality a sponge in the base of the printer ) has reached the point where the printer thinks it is too full and need to be changed. This decision is based on the number of times the head cleaning pump has drawn ink from the cartridges. It doesn't have any means of telling if the sponge is soaked with ink or has plenty of life left in it. If you took the printer to an Epson dealer they could change the sponge and use a program to reset the waste in counter ... at a cost ... and they'd probably tell you the thing was broken or not worth the trouble. To be fair, at the prices they'd charge it probably would be more cost effective to buy a new printer <lol> Now for the good news - there is a free program that can do this waste ink counter reset job. As for the sponge in the back of the printer - all the ones I've seen have been nowhere near the point of risking ink seeping out of the printer. It's not as if there's a lot of ink sent there at one go and it soon dries up. The counter reset program is here http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml - it's free and also does a better job of telling you how much ink is left in those cartridges :-) In case you are wondering - yes I've used the program myself to restore a non-working Epson printer to full working condition. BTW - It's not only Epson's that have this problem, Canon printers too have need of this sort of reset after a while.
