I had a new cell phone and I couldn't get it to turn on. I stopped at a mall and walked in and looked around for a 20's - 30's age guy and walked to him and asked him if he would see if he could turn on my cell phone. It took him about 3 seconds to do it. Too bad you can't take your equipment to a mall and find someone like I did. Do you have any techy neighbors or can you call your son-in-law and ask him about it. BTW, if the router is turned off, it won't have any flashing lights. You need an electrical current to get anything to light up. Good Luck! -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, Aug 11, 2010 7:19 pm Subject: Re: [SR-NEWBIE] Questions about laptops On the back of your computer there is a place for a telephone line to be connected. If you use the dialup method then you are not on wireless. When you go to sign on you would probably hear some noises call a handshake which is the puter talking to the server and vice versa. I do have the phone cable connected but do not use it to connect to the web unless the wireless is not working for some reason- like power outage. do you have a tv cable company who provides your television channels? If so you would look to see if there is a wire connected to your computer that has the same end on it that plugs into your TV. This would be direct wiring to your computer. If you have a wire from the computer box outside or the back of your TV to another black or white box with lights on it, then that is your wireless connection. It takes 2 boxes for me. One is the modem that is first connected to the cable line. Then a wire runs to another box with similar lights. That is the router and the end of the cords. That would mean you are wireless- no wire connecting the internet directly to your computer. You can have a wireless mouse, a wireless printer, etc. Almost anything you have connected to the back or even the front of your computer can have a wireless item to do the same task, just without the need to have wires running between them, Hope this helps. Let me know if you need to know more. Fran In a message dated 8/11/2010 11:55:43 A.M. Were it not for this list and theseamazingly knowledgeable folks who are willing to share that knowledge, wewould still be using typewriters.I have no idea how to determine whether our router is wireless nor how toturn it on/off. Our son-in-law set up the computer and said enjoy! A friendgave us his used laptop and said now go surf the web rather than watch TV!!Thank you for writing and taking your time to offer suggestions for help.Rana>>>>> -----Original Message-----> From: RickandRana <[email protected]>> To: Barry <[email protected]>; [email protected]> Sent: Tue, Aug 10, 2010 9:20 am> Subject: Re: [SR-NEWBIE] Questions about laptops>>> ------------------------------->
